I have 2 weetabix and a belvita breakfast biscuit every morning,I am wondering whether there is too much sugar in belvita biscuits

Do you count carbs @johnbear2 ?

What's your two hour blood test like after that breakfast?

The normal Belvita biscuits have approx 8.5g carbs per biscuit and 2.5g of that is sugar.

Hi @johnbear2. Personally I'm very anti breakfast bars, protein bars all singing all dancing health bars. I think they are a total waste of money.
If after your breakfast you're still hungry you may be better off with something more wholesome.
1/2 banana and peanut butter. Tasty.

Two Weetabix isn't excessive. Hopefully, the OP will give us more information about his insulin regime eg fixed doses per meal, carb counting, etc

Many people here eat cereal for breakfast. It's an individual choice. We all eat varying amounts of carbs and enjoy different foods.

Personally wouldn't touch either, my insulin sensitivity is non existent in the morning and can't tolerate carbs at this time of the day. I stick to sardines or chicken strips with celery sticks.

Same with me. No carbs in the morning other than celery and avocado. Maybe a slice of deli turkey.

Do you still see a rise? I see one around 3 hours. Can't take more insulin with BF or I would go low 1 st. I also back up my bolus 10 min.

Occasionally get an unexpected rise, yesterday for example I had only had sardines but ended up at ~ 7 mmol after 2 hours. Might have been the weather though as it's really hot here 25 C with 87 % humidity @ 08:00 :-(

Never tried avocado for breakfast , is it filling ?

OMG! Filling? Best BF ever. I went through 50 years of life always hungry. Since eating 1/2 of a large avocado for BF I go from 7 or 8 am until 3 and still not hungry hungry. I could easily skip lunch but I need some calories because I don't want to lose weight. Then I split the other 1/2 over lunch and dinner

I think because it's so high in fat AND fiber that the bs and insulin spikes stay very low. BF was my hardest meal to get right but sets the tone for the day. If BF is messed up the whole day is.

It's weird that my spike is highest at 3 hours but I think it's just hormones waking up. I can't do any exercise in the morning other than a slow stroll our ill spike.

Some days I stay very flat but some days I get that weird spike. Everything else is the same. Example. Fasting 85. Some days I don't go above 90 but some days I'll pop up to 115! Not bad numbers but I don't like swings. If that happens I usually take 1/2 unit correction

I do question coffee. I try not to drink it until a few hours after insulin as I have read it competes with insulin and of course raises cortisol and adrenaline.

I think thats your Liver saying "we've got no glucose" and delivering you some. In my opinon you would be better off having some carbs atleast you can bolus for it.

Martin

I'll give avocado a go at the weekend thanks for the info. I always want to try new things. Coffee I haven't had for > 4 years since diagnosis , played havoc with my BS when I tried it last.

Thanks for your opinion Martin, however I still need to bolus for low carb breakfasts even if it's 0 carbs. Protein gets me in the morning but not to the same extent as carbs, which send my BS through the roof even with careful bolusing! I'm a DP sufferer.

In the evening I can tolerate loads of carbs with correct bolusing, last night I scoffed a 100g chocolate bar with ~ 60 g of carbs, no spike whatsoever!

Have you tried moving your bolus further in advance of your meal @Wurst ? For years I thought a spike after my cereal breakfast was unavoidable - until I moved the bolus well in advance. I now have a 2 hour result of around 6 rather than 11+

I too have DP and also a big waking rise, but bolusing 30 or so minutes in advance has totally sorted this for me. I bolused 45 mins in advance when pregnant and very insulin resistant and it still worked and kept me in range.

I always mention it as it's an amazing result from a relatively small change.

Thanks for the advice, I've never tried this for breakfast, the technique you mention works well for evening meals though. Might just give it a try as I'm always jealous when my son is eating coco pops for his breakfast :-0

Breakfast is the one meal I have to be strict about bolusing in advance for. I can get away with an immediate bolus for other meals, but not breakfast.

Move your bolus forward gradually until you find the 'sweet spot'.

I haven't tried it with Coco Pops : D I have granola, muesli, Weetabix, etc, and it works perfectly. If you do experiment with it, stick to the same breakfast while perfecting the advance bolus time as it makes it easier : )

Cup of black coffee every morning. Start every day off with a nice flat line.
