Being diabetic!
I've just read the article about this based on recent research and can offer anecdotal evidence to support the findings.

I have T2. I'm not on medication. The advice I've had from health people is that I should have 3 small meals a days, consisting of a starchy carb, protein, fruit/ veg, and 2 small snacks in between meals. I was told that this will keep my BG at a steady level but it doesn't work, however careful I am about carbs. What I have found is that if I eat more at breakfast and less throughout the rest of the day I feel better, I don't get hungry so quickly, and my BG levels don't fluctuate as widely. It seems logical to me to eat more at the start of the day having fasted overnight for 10/12 hours.

Hi. The food advice you have been given is wrong (as it usually is from diet experts). As diabetics we are glucose intolerant to vaying degrees. This means we need to keep the carbs down and this means carbs in all their forms. You don't have to have carbs with any meal but spreading the small quantities you do have out a bit thru the day does make sense to avoid spikes. Proteins and fruit/veg are OK but avoid tropical fruits such as bananas etc as they are loaded with sugar. Fat is OK. Snacking is often unecessary but if you do feel like it then nuts, cheese and berries are good.

Hello,

Yes, carbs are the enemy I'm afraid, and especially the starchy ones. You have been given the normal poor NHS dietary advice that may well be fine for non-diabetics, but is certainly not fine for type 2's. The fewer carbs you eat at any time, the better. Make up the lost energy with increased fats and protein, and lots of leafy green veg and salads. This is especially important in the mornings when our insulin resistance is at its worst. It improves as the day progresses.

The worst culprits are bread (of any sort), potatoes, rice, pasta and cereals. We also need to be careful with fruit and milk.

A good and filling breakfast is a full fat Greek yogurt with a few berries added for sweetness (and I mean a few). Maybe a coffee with a couple of spoons of double cream. That will keep you going till lunch time. No need for snacks. Alternatively, a cooked breakfast. Eggs cooked any which way, bacon, tomato, mushrooms.
