soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I can't take breakfast cereals, because they send my BG through the roof. Even porridge
However, I did some thinking and wondered how much processing it takes to make the breakfast from those grasses in the field. You can't eat raw unprocessed grains. they're indigestible and toxic.
So in this modern world, where we're encouraed to eat natural unprocessed foods, one of the MOST processed categories of foods is being sold to us as "Healthy" and Whole".
Cornflakes have their own website explaining how they are made and natural as picking an apple, It aint!
Cereals became popular when people decided not to get up early enough to make a meal at breakfast time. Then came Pop tarts!
Me
I'm getting up 20 minutes early and am not to lazy to crack an egg.

But cereals work for a lot of people, I make sure that I get a lot of fibre from them.

I don't think it is lazy to have them, I just don't have time to cook a breakfast in the morning. I wish i did.

Each to there own I suppose

hanadr, I suspect that without widespread grain and rice production, we simply wouldn't be able to feed much of the world's ever growing population. Many rely on these staple foods just to stay alive. Whilst I can't eat cereals either, (mostly because of all the added sugar and glucose/fructose syrup they contain, a big beef of mine), the majority can without too many problems.

What's the alternative? Grain is grown so widely because it has a high yield and is relatively cheap and easy to process using modern farming methods, keeps for a long time and is easy to store. I'm no expert, but I really do wonder what crops we could realistically replace them with. Any ideas?

i love breakfast cereals,i dont think i could manage without them.i have to stay away from a lot of them now but i find that weetabix , special k and shreddies, dont affect me at all .when you have to get up at five in the morning the last thing i want to be doing is preparing food.a cereal is so fast and easy and tasty,i think i would get fed up of eggs every morning but i find them nice at the weekend. dermot

Indeed, cereals have been the staple food in most of the world since man learned how to process them. The earliest evidence dates from 23,000 bce, when people around the sea of Galilee were harvesting wild grains and grinding them .
I agree that many breakfast products are highly processed, highly sugared products and not necessarily very good for us. However,I think that most of our ancestors would have been far more likely to have eaten some form of bread rather than be lucky enough to have eggs or meat on a regular basis.

Do we possibly have it all the wrong way around as well? I'm sure I read somewhere that breakfast was originally the largest meal of the day, followed by a moderate lunch and finally a small supper. Of course we kept different hours too. Only a few hundred years ago and I doubt evolution has moved us along that quickly.

I used to enjoy cereal for breakfast occasionally but never eat it now, a really good cooked breakfast (bacon, sausage, mushroom, egg, black pudding, tomato, mushroom and bread, all fried in goose fat) is my personal treat of choice, YUM! :D

I'm with you kegstore! Breakfast cereals are a complete abberation in my view.
Take some cereal (which we're not best adapted to eat in the first place), process the hell out of it. Oh dear, there's only the starch left! OK, lets process it a little more, chemically add some 'vitamins', and a little, no, a lot of sugar. Chuck in some dried fruit (more sugar) to make it look healthy, package it and market it to make it look like the only realistic option for breakfast.
I doubt whether anyone can actually 'tolerate' it. Some may get away with it for a while, but many will become ill as a consequence of eating that way. Mr. Kellogg has a lot to answer for.
I ate it for years, but would rather go hungry now. Proper food for me these days.

I love my cereals in the morning, the porridge you do in the microwave is brilliant and doesn't send my BG levels ragging. Some other cereals are just as good, Oatabix is another good one and I have had a small portion of Oats and More (But have to be careful because it's so morish you want another bowl) that is ok, it doesn't suit everyone though!

hi kay i like the taste of oatabix but i find it not great at absorbing the milk.i end up with it being mush on the outside and crunchy in the middle i must try the smaller ones dermot

I can't seem to touch cereal either, which I find really difficult as it used to be my main breakfast before. I can't stand eggs every day, so I have come up with a cereal alternative of greek yoghurt with a sprinkling of mixed nuts (flaked almonds, ground almonds and walnuts) with a little sweetener and cinnamon, then sliced strawberries and/or blueberries. Very occasionally will have a teaspoon of Lizi's Granola mix, but it seems I'm much more affected by carbs in the morning, so this is a rare treat.

i myself am not diabetic but my daughter is. im not lazy at all but some people dont want eggs and toast every morning in life. having cereal is the only thing the child likes. i find you saying we are all lazy for not eating eggs a disgrace. :?

I AM lazy and have no problem admitting it! I much prefer the extra time in bed than having to faff around in the kitchen. My fried breakfast is a very rare treat indeed, and normally someone else is doing the cooking. I make do with a croissant or a slice of toast and gallons of coffee normally. :D

Its not disgraceful, its an opinion! The point the person made was that cereals are convenient and fast and some do not have the time. Some responders appear to believe (guilty conscience?) the comment means they are lazy – well that’s a matter of opinion isn’t it?

I used to like Special K but when diagnosed found they did not help my BS level – however Sainsbury’s Balance does not have the same effect. So we have clear examples of how food reacts so differently from one to another.

I also love a cooked breakfast however we must also remember the cost involved and how lucky some are that they do not need to be swayed by the actual cost of food these days.

Given the differences in us humans, please can we at least make “our” comments without the fear of being labelled disgraceful! Life is really too short to squabble when we are all searching for information and answers.

I find cereals affect me more when I am premenstrual than the rest of the month. That week, I have egg on toast for breakfast - but have cereal in the evening when it affects me less. Don't enjoy the egg as much, but at least I can look forward to my bowl of cereal and berries later. Worth a try for anyone whose insulin resistance changes through the day.

I will remember that..

Oatibix are probably the best cereal for not raising my BG levels being made from oats as the name suggests, unfortunately to me they taste like cardboard so I generally eat Cornflakes, Branflakes or Special K I just have small portions :D :D

Hello everyone on board. Diabetes is such a disease that its never 100% controlled and no one can say that its tight controlled. Ups and downs are always there but what is important the quantity of intake especially carbohydrates made from wheat. Cornflakes or Rice Crispies are better for me. I personally found out that Bread or any other product made from wheat when eaten the BG level rises more comparing with other items I eat in the morning in my breakfast.
Again it would vary person to person and their activities and mobility.
Taking care of Diabetes and discussing with other friends who are suffering with this problem can help a lot. Good luck all.

I can't tolerate cereals the send my BG through the roof, I thought I was Ok with porridge as 2hr PPs were fine, but due to a higher than expected HbA1c, I checked the Blood sugar 101 site and decided to test after 1hr this showed spikes of between 10.5 and 11.5

I did find that I could handle puffed wheat at 11g carbs per serving but after being advised of possible toxicity due to the manufacturing process thats now an occasional treat :D

This link courtsey of Trinwasser gives good info about wheat products.
