Good Afternoon,

Fairly new to the forums after being introduced by my wife through this thread help needed as the wife of someone with t2

Everything is still going well and I've not felt this good in years. Since last Thursday when I changed my diet completely I've been getting bacon, eggs and sausage etc from the works canteen. It's been ok but I don't want to be eating the same things daily whilst at work. And there is the expense as well !!!
I'm looking for ideas of food that I could take to work that would keep me on track and healthy.
I do have access to a microwave at work, although I'll probably have to give it a good clean before using it

I just have a coffee and cream for "breakfast" .. rarely if ever eat before mid afternoon.
You can of course have anything you want for your first meal of the day. If you want to low carb then just make sure it has as few as possible. Cold meats, pork scratchings, hard boiled eggs maybe avocado?

Hello and welcome.

Breakfast was the hardest for me. Things you could try are some greek yoghurt with a few berries, make some keto muffins beforehand and bring them with you. Boiled eggs with some cheese.

They are just a few ideas- go to diet doctor for some others.

In the end I just gave up breakfast except for weekends and that has by and large worked for me.

Good luck.

Bringing in your own boiled eggs would work... (And be less expensive). You could also bring in some full fat greek yoghurt, maybe with some coconut shavings, (thawed by the time to get to work) berries, and/or a bit of nuts. Cheese roll-ups are easy too (cheese, butter, herbs, voilà), cold cuts or chicken (microwaveable?). Smoked salmon with avocado and cream cheese? I don't usually do breakfast. Just have tea in the morning, don't eat until somewhere between 11 and 3 or so, unless I just do one meal that day. (If I do one meal, it's dinner with the hubby). Find whatever works for you. https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto/recipes/breakfasts/quick might have some stuff on offer...

I'm glad you're seeing such great improvements.
Jo

If you don't mind eating the same meal twice, you could take in a portion of a previous dinner to microwave at work.
I do something similar, but for dinner since my wife attends an exercise class once per week and so doesn't cook dinner on a Tuesday. So I can either prepare something for just me, or more usually I just microwave a saved portion from one of the recent meals she has cooked.
Tonight I'm having low carb 'black bean spaghetti' with a low car vegetable sauce. But more often I've had re-heated roast chicken with some low carb veg - I just re-heat it in the microwave.

Try to think in terms of breakfast simply being another meal, you don't have to stick to 'breakfasty' things. I sometimes take a flask of hot soup or stew(as low carb as you want) homemade soup for example, keeps hot in a flask all day and you could supplement it with a piece of cheese, some nuts, or even a low carb cracker or two (depending on how many carbs you wish to consume). Maybe a cold sausage, or yes, even a pork chop!!!

If you don't mind fish or chicken for breakfast you could try this. I call them tuna, salmon or chicken boats. Use baby romaine lettuce for the boat. Mix mayo with tuna, salmon or chicken(diced small) Add diced ( your choice )green onion or onion, pickle or green relish (all diced). Put the salad in the romaine lettuce leaf(boat).

If you're looking for a 'traditional' cereal and like granola, I recently discovered this little beauty at 5.9g carbs per 40g portion. Have it with unsweetened almond milk and you won't add any more carbs. If you're in the UK, it's stocked by Sainsbury's and Waitrose.

I like the sound of that! Love it when people find alternatives and let everybody know. I'm off to Waitrose today so will look out for some, thank you. x

You're welcome. I'd just about given up on finding a reasonably low-carb breakfast cereal. They're all stuffed with carbs, even the so-called 'healthy' ones. I stumbled upon this one purely by chance and it's by far the lowest carb cereal I've seen so I had to share .

Its still 15% carbs though. Not something I'd want to consume.

Fair enough. I feel that 5.9g carbs per 40g portion is reasonable and it's way lower than any other comparable product. Ultimately it's a personal choice though. No-one's forcing it down anyone's neck

Hi Captain, don't feel you have to justify what you eat to anyone. Everybody can have their opinion of course but it's not their business, it's YOURS. x

I certainly wasn't saying don't eat it but many try to limit their intake to foods with a certain percentage of carbs (say 10% max) in which case this would be out.

As a carnivore I keep my carb intake a lot lower. As you say if it works for you then great.

Indeed. Diabetes is a personal journey for all of us. One size definitely doesn't fit all.

I'm lucky in that I love eggs & bacon and could eat them every day, but for variety I will change things up for breakfast like an avocado with just lemon juice and seasoning (touch of garlic powder and black pepper) or an Atkins wafer protein bar (3g net carbs & pretty tasty) with chamomile tea. I am on antibiotics currently so have cut out all teas and coffees until that is done but usually will have tea or coffee. Another breakfast item I sometimes do would be lettuce & corned beef, green olives on the side. It's technically "processed meat" but I don't eat a lot of it and it is absolutely 0 carbs. Some people think it's disgusting but I like the taste of it. Some cheeses are also a good option. A plain thick Greek yogurt as well on some butter lettuce is good. Sprinkling some mint spice on the yogurt also adds some flavor.

I’m with @Captain Crunch on this one. I weigh out 20g of the cereal he mentioned, so rounded up, 3g carbs, then add some more almonds, chopped up, chia seed, plus some psyllium husk (for more fibre), along with a tablespoon or 2 of ground flaxseed, then I add almond milk and a splash of double cream. After a couple of mins, the ingredients thicken up like a pudding. Nice. Makes a good breakfast.

That sounds good . Where do you get psyllium husk from? Online I assume as I've not seen it in any stores (UK). I thought Holland & Barrett might stock it but they only have psyllium husk capsules.
