"Breakfast is The Most Important Meal of the Day......"

Never thought about it that way Catherine, less oats, more nuts etc.....will try it! A rise of just 2 points would be a dream for me, no matter what I eat I rise minimum 20 :(

All these ideas are great guys thank you! Off to get some full fat Greek yoghurt and berries!

I've run out of test strips now until Wednesday though..

There is another issue with breakfast for me, I work away a lot, for weeks at a time, (residential English courses), and at mealtimes we all eat together, part of the whole "English immersion" idea. Breakfast is a diabetics nightmare, white bread, fruit, cereals, coffee....that's it. No eggs, cheese, nothing like that..So there I am, sat watching 7 other people enjoying toast and butter, jam, etc....what do I do? "sod it, I'll have some toast". I have to eat, it's the start of a very long day.......

We then go on to have three course meal at lunch, same at dinner....with snacks in between! (which I avoid)

Perhaps you need to inform the kitchen staff you have a special diet. I'm sure they would accommodate vegetarians, coeliacs, gluten intolerant people etc. so why not a low carb diabetic?

Yes they know about it, they go easy on potatoes at mealtimes but that's about it........

It's not a hotel, it's a company owned country house, like a B&B. They won't make special meals or buy special bread or anything like that..... I try not to eat bread, I don't eat any fruit at all now, I'll just have to drink black coffee from now on I think. Just plenty of it! Or have toast and live with the high sugar in the mornings

Can't you take your own bits and bobs? Is there a fridge somewhere you can store some double cream for your coffee, and some yogurts for breakfasts? Best not to be negative. There are always round things if you look for them. I don't believe they don't make special meals or provide special foods. Any one of the residents could have a food allergy or be vegetarian etc and they will have to be catered for. Speak to someone in your Company if not.

You won't be much use to your employer if you are ill. I agree with the posters above. Ask for an omelette.

Have taken my own oatmeal before, was told it's "too much for the staff to be making two different breakfasts for people"... so didn't bother after that....

Ok, it's not as bleak as it looked in my post....if a student or teacher has allergy or anything, of course they will work around it, if they don't like chicken they can choose fish, things like that yes. Going out of their way to buy anything special? No chance. They just won't.

Laws don't mean anything here, they aren't bound by any "act" to do anything for anyone . "ya don't like it, don't stay" is the motto here.....that's Spain...

BUT, I think I've learned some good stuff here on the forum so far, reading old posts, answers from you guys etc, I think things will get better for me, feel positive for the first time in months! Have already made some changes/plans in the kitchen! :)

Perhaps I've got it wrong, but looking at your profile, it states you're on insulin? On that basis, can't you modify your dose to cover the carbs in your breakfast? I appreciate it may not be ideal, but nor are rampant bloods, every day?

How can you do English immersion at breakfast without a fry-up?

Bewildered Scandinavian scratches her head.

I don't know how to quote on my laptop....on my iPhone I just touch the screen and it offers "quote"...anyone shed any light?

That's a bit advanced for me I think.....haven't been on insulin long...not sure how to modify it around meals..

Have your health care folks talked about carb counting at all? as I understand it (bearing in mind I'm not an insulin user), carb counting enables you to match your insulin to the food you are eating. In other words, you take the drug to deal with the food, not feed yourself in order to match the meds. Can you see how that could make sense?

I don't have any helpful links to hand, but if you do a search on the forum on DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) there have been some excellent discussions that might kick start some thinking for you.

Thanks I'll have a search for it! My health care folks at the hospital gave me a diet to follow.......54% carbs, the rest proteins and fats, and to eat starches at every meal! but I've found that bread, potatoes, oats spike my sugar..

I've just been and bought nuts, natural yoghurt, blueberries and raspberries!!! :) looking forward to breakfast!!

Excellent. I just did a search and got 98 results just using DAFNE. in fact, this could be a great starter: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/bdec-online-course.56228/

To be clear: I'm not suggesting you go ahead and start modifying things without any support, and if you are on a mixed insulin it may not be possible anyway, but at least if you like the thought of it, based on informative reading, you would be well armed when you go to discuss it with your healthcare support team.

Something to eat at breakfast time is, in my opinion, essential, but the fewer carbs at breakfast the better. Some people on here disagree, but if I miss or delay mine my liver dumps glucose and this affects my pre-lunch levels.
.

I'm still having problems with this liver dump thing and wondered if eating earlier in the day would help, my levels are at their highest late morning before I've eaten (around double what they were at bedtime the night before!) and I spend the rest of the day trying to get them down!
I've always found it difficult to eat in the morning, till I've been up for 2-3 hours, so am wondering if something like a 9 bar would be ok for breakfast, i could probably manage something like that with my first cuppa.

Can you manage a cup full of full fat yoghurt with maybe some coconut oil stirred in and some nuts?

I know a lot of people here have yogurt, is that the natural stuff or fruit? I can't stand natural yoghurt!
Full fat live plain natural.
What's this unnatural yoghurt all about then?
