FOOTBALL. MY husband is a sports fanatic and watches everything. Most i can put up with just not football.
Can anyone sugest a cereal for breakfast please. I take sleeping pills and as a result always wake up groggy  and deffinately not up for any cooked breakfast  . I have been having any cereal but want to make changes here. If i dont have cereal i have 2 slices of bergen toast and maybe a THIN smearing of marmalade. I have changed my milk to lactose free and to my amazement was lovely. When i first became diabetic i went all out changing what i ate then not long after i crashed and burned. I have managed most things now just not breakfast. I have noticed that when i have cereal i get an intense craving for carbs so was thinking maybe for brekfast only going with it and get something high in carbs?

Now now people, i know this is a boring subject but you all eat something. You cant all be eating cooked.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help this simpleton

I sometimes have a slice of toasted wholemeal homemade bread, butter (no carbs in butter) and a smearing of marmite. Ot boiled eggs, orscrambled eggs, or cheese on a slice of toast (homemeade again)

or sometimes just cheese sliced and aiwth some cucumber.

But I may be odd.

I have even had ham slices and little tomatoes for breakfast.

I'm afraid I haven't found anything that works. One Weetabix is about the best I can do, though Porridge will keep me going until lunch - that's hardly instant though. I have been substituting it for a glass of cold milk, however, on the basis that as I'm barely awake my brain might not realise there's no Weetabix to go with.

I can't do breakfast. Before diagnosis it was because the earlier I ate in the day, the more I ate throughout the day. It also make me feel sick. Now i have a mug of hot, creamy coffee. It sometimes has butter in it, sometimes coconut oil and is very yummy.

The thing to do about breakfast is think outside the box.

I often have left overs from the night before or some of the cooked cold goodies I keep in the fridge (cooked low carb sausage, boiled eggs etc). Sometimes cheese and/or chicken type stuff or a protein shake.

Many cultures, like the Scandinavians, eat protein like cold meats for breakfast. I am finding that protein and fats keep me full until lunchtime in a way cereal never did. On cereal I would be hungry and shaking by 11am.

I like the idea of Hot Milky coffee, thanks for the idea

Like you I am finding breakfast is the hardest.

I can low carb very easily at lunch or dinner. Meat, fish and vegetables, in various combinations. Miss wholemeal bread with rare steak mind!

I can eat strawberries without a problem but not really an everyday option at this time of year!

Porridge spikes my BG and as for All Bran - tried it ended up at 12 mmo/L - checked the pack and its got a lot of sugar in it. Thanks Diabetes UK!

I have cooked stuff on a weekend, smoked cod, mushrooms and poached eggs this morning.

I am going to try scrambled eggs this week, quick if done in a microwave, you can always drop in a few bits of ham or vegetables to liven it up.

omelettes are good too. I am trying to think of what else.....

I think what I have done is stopped thinking of breakfast as "breakfast", and just consider it to be another meal like lunch or tea, rather than one having special foods only to be eaten in the morning, if that makes sense?

I VERY occasionally have a glass of ice cold, sugar free crusha mixed with cream and Lactofree milk. The other hot day option (and one that often confuses baristas) is a cold latte made with half whole milk, half cream with lots of ice.

Exactly! Just think outside the box. Once you get away from "Breakfast foods" it's much easier. :)

I have fruit and yogurt.
When there are no decent fresh strawberries, blueberries etc Sainsbury's do bags of frozen fruits which are a good substitute.

I put a few of the frozen berries or whatever in the bottom of a pot, sprinkle a bit of milled flaxseed on top (this soaks up the liquids as they defrost and stop them going soggy) then add a few nuts and seeds. Then top the mixture off with either Soya yogurt or Greek yoghurt. Put the lid on the pot and put in the fridge over night. By morning the fruit has thawed and it is lovely and refreshing first thing in the morning.

I have had this combination most mornings for about the last year and still don't get fed up with it. It keeps me going for quite a while depending on what sort of work I'm doing (heavy energetic can sometimes make me hungry before lunch but not too bad).

Love my lattes - yours sounds really nummy...........actually, it sounds like it might be a good sub for icecream. Do you whizz it in the blender?

The craving for carbs after eating carbs is one of the problems with carbs.
The more carbs you eat, the more carbs you crave.

Giving in to the addictive craving is probably not the best way to control your BG.

As suggested already, protein is good.
There is no need to eat something like 'breakfast cereal' - breakfast is just a meal like any other, and you can eat any food at any meal.
Cheese slices, ham, hard boiled eggs, cold chicken, tomatoes - you can soon get together a good quick meal as long as you do a little preparation the day before.

Depending on how well you are controlling your BG at the moment, having toast with even a thin smear of sugar jelly may not be the best thing either.

Just make sure you have good stuff easily available, and don't think of breakfast as some kind of special occasion where you have to eat special breakfast foods.
Though a tuna salad for breakfast still doesn't seem right, for some reason.

Cheers

Julia, I don't whizz mine up because I prefer it runny and cold, not like a slushy but give it a go!

I do eat cereal, well that's what it starts out as.... To a bag of museli or granola I add 200 grams of ground almonds and 100 grams of flaked almonds and 200 grams of mixed nuts (not peanuts). This brings the carb content down quite significantly and then I add hot milk and a good sprinkling of cinnamon.

Mistee, it's not for everyone but I have mini shredded wheat. Nice and filling, easy, high carbs like most cereals but lowest sugar of all. Doesn't seem to hit my BGs.

I ate cereal for breakfast all my life and for many years for lunch as well and was stuck for breakfasts when I started going lower carb. Now I have full fat Greek Yogurt from Lidl (recommended by someone on here), mix it with some low fat yogurt to cut the fat down a bit and mix some fruit in with it if I want. I tried the lower fat yogurts but they didn't fill me as well as the thick creamy Greek ones. Yummy. I make quite a few up and have them ready for when I need them. I can't stomach anything else in the mornings, and it doesn't affect my cholesterol levels.

I made some sugar free egg custard today. I had to use full fat milk as I am low on my lactofree, but a quarter of the bowl is around 4 carbs. I think that would be a nice breakfast, and you can make it in advance.

Ohhh sounds yummy Jeannemum. How did you make it? After reading on here I got lactofree this week to try and it's lovely.
