Just when I thought I was in the way to understanding my bs levels and using the glucose monitor I have another question. I had blueberries and probiotic yoghurt for breakfast. My fasting level was 6. I tested one hour after my meal (I was feeling not quite right so I decided to test) and my level was 6.2. I then tested an hour later (so two hours after my meal) and the level was 5.5. If I had only tested 2 hours after I would not have known that my bs had gone up to 6.2. So, when should I be testing and which of these levels is the most relevant to decided whether it is a good food or not? At 5,5 I would say it is OK to eat but not at 6.2. I am confused!

HI, would the blueberries give a bg rise, and do they put glucose syrup in the yoghurt, you did not have very much for your breakfast and I would think your bgs would come down even lower before lunch.

Not sure why you were feeling not quite right as that is an excellent response after one hour. Berries are the best fruit to have if want to eat fruit and the fat in the yoghurt (if there was any) would slow down any spike. You probably would have been around 10 if it was two slices of toast.

as i believe it, unless slowed down by fat your spike should be at 45 minutes, the 2 hour test is to show you how your dealing with the food not its peek, in the early days it wasnt unusual for me to test every 15 minutes when i was testing a certain food or the effect of fat etc, its all very interesting to me so i tested alot, now i often test once or twice a week, its normally random when im in a traffic jam hehe

i also understand things to be as long as your 2 hour reading isnt more than 1 above your pre meal reading then that was a good meal, but im no expert

I'd be looking at a post meal rise of <2 mmol/l, but that's as a T1, any higher then I've either underdosed, or dosed at the wrong time (high fat/protein meal, extended eating etc). If it's dropping significantly at 2 hours, which does happen to me, then I've either overdosed, or again mistimed it - I can sometimes get this with slower release carbs like porridge.

As for the berries and yogurt, a great idea for breakfast, desert or just a snack.

that may well be the same for t2 and im remembering it wrong :)

thank you for all your replies, sorry I didn't have time to reply yesterday - I was busy doing my aldi shop of lots of low carb food. I am still learning about how and when to test my bs. As my husband says "biology isn't an exact science". I had blueberries and cream today as last time I had that and tested my bs was 5.5. today it was 6.2. I will try again tomorrow and see what I get!

I tried blueberries and cream again this afternoon and after 2 1/2 hours my bs level was 4.5 - confused or what! I have had a few levels under 5 and I am wondering if that is because I am not eating often enough and getting hungry. I had a piece of brie and a rice cake with chocolate coating (not the best thing but the easiest thing to hand) as I was going out and felt fine after that.

Normal non diabetic bs will rise after food, also exercise, food content already in your stomach will affect readings.

why are you confused by the reading? blueberries and cream is low carb

I'm confused because I have had blueberries and cream 3 times and got three different readings - 5.5, 6.2 and 4.5 and I don't know why there is such a difference. does it depend on what the reading is beforehand and the difference between the two?

yes it definatly depends on what you was before and a thousand other things too unfortunately, in the early days of testing my numbers where insane, no ryme or reason to them, its very frustrating but once your base numbers are where you want them its much easier to see patterns emerge

Hi Aqua lung,
don't be put off by your results they are quite good it seems bluberries + cream or yogart work well for you. It's best to test before you eat then 2 hours after. Before you eat is your base line then compare your +2hrs to the base as elydave already said if it's greater than 2 then it has caused a rise. If for example you started with a bg of 4.0 and afterwards you went to 7.5 then that may not be what you're aiming for if you're trying to low carb. if you started at 5.5 and went to 6.2 then that would be a better result as it has given you less of a spike. There's really not much difference between 6 and 6.2 infact if you were to test twice straight after each other you would very likely get a 6, 6.2, 6.5, 5.5 etc due to the variation in your bg machine. I think someone can correct me, but it can have a variation of up to 15% and still be accurate enough to be working ok.
In my opinion results to be happy with, well done :D
