BS levels gone Wild.

Hello All,

Hope we are all well.

I started a weight lifting routine this week, I have trained 2 times up to now, but my BS levels seem to have gone a little potty.

Normal I am less than 6.5mmol before I go to bed, even if I have eaten a little late, but in last few days I have been around 8.5mmol when going to bed.

I have not changed the way I eat or anything like that, still low carbing as was say last week.

Does weight lifting increase BS levels?

Any advice is always welcome.

Cheers

While moderate exercise uses up some Blood Glucose and tends to lead to an immediate lowering of BG, intense or long-duration exercise can use up so much BG that the Liver responds by releasing some of its Glucose (stored as Glycogen or animal starch) and because we have Diabetes, we tend to overshoot and end up high.

Physical activity is good for us in so many other ways and overall the net effect is to use up BG.. but be warned that your BG may drop quickly, even a day or two later.

You might try testing before, during and after your exercise to get a better picture of what is happening. Some find that having a snack (maybe carbs, maybe protein or maybe try a mix of both by eating some nuts for example) before the activity, can help to keep the liver from feeling the need to help out.
