As a prediabetic I am trying to get my bs down before my retest in December/January. My HBa1c was 46. I have a glucose monitor and am testing before and after meals. What is a reasonable level for my bs to be 2 hours after a meal? what is the level at which I should be thinking "I don't want to eat that again"?

The guideline for otherwise healthy people is 7.8 two hours after a meal and 8.5 for type 2 diabetics, though why it shouldn't be the same I have no idea. However, if I were you, I'd aim for 6.5 to 7.0 two hours after a meal. Nearly a year ago I was 9s and 10s and now I am 4s and 5s. I feel a little despondent if I get to the mid 6s now. Consider the role of exercise in dropping blood sugar levels. 2 x 15 mins per day will probably do the trick for you. You're in a great position to avoid diabetes.

thank you for your reply, it makes things alot clearer. apart from the odd 'bad' food my levels have mostly been between 4 and 6. I walk the dog daily but I am also building up my exercise on the cross trainer.

Hi aqualung, it sounds like your doing well but rather than thinking "I don't want to eat that again" maybe try thinking "I will try a smaller portion when I eat that next time".

There will be some foods that you may find that you cant eat even in very small quantities but if you try reducing the carbs rather than removing them you might just find that you can still enjoy a lot of the foods you have always eaten but just in smaller portions :D

I never used testing just to remove foods I used it as a way of letting me know what I could eat rather than what I couldnt by reducing the quantities of the carbs in my meals, and as my control got better I was able to eat larger quantities of some carbs as my insulin resistance had reduced.

Thanks that makes sense! Having cut out sugar and bread, pasta, rice and potatoes there isn't much that I normally eat that gives me high levels. the argh moment was after I had eaten dominos pizza and homemade chip - my level was 11!
