Burgen bread with Nutella spread

LoveLife

Member
Hi,

I have recently started low carbing and have seen a massive difference in my BG levels.

I did a Google search for low carb and Nutella spread is one of them.

I have since tried Burgen bread with Nutella spread and have not seen a spike in my sugar levels!

Have you tried this and if so how were your sugar levels affected?

Thanks

Really ? (dashes to cupboard to read the back of the jar).. it says 3g per serving, which doesn't sound too bad. That would make a slice of Burgen with Nutella the same as a slice of standard bread.

My carb counter lists Chocolate Spread, Hazelnut, Nutella as

Per 100g
Calories (kcal) 533
Protein (g) 6.6
Carbohydrate (g) 56.4
Sugars (g) 55.2
Fat (g) 31
Saturates (g) 10.3
Fibre (g) 3.5
Sodium (g) 0.033

Not my idea of low carb!!

Pre snack BG: 5.2
Post snack 2hrs: 6.1

Just to note this reading is based on one medium sliced Burgen bread (Linseed and Soya) and Nutella spread.

I guess it's the low GI that helps as it breaks down the glucose gradually?

Sounds like your getting your head around testing and eating what is OK for you lovelife, congratulations

Depends how much you spread on the bread I imagine, if you dolloped 100g onto a slice of toast I would imagine it would have quite a marked effect but how much does a reasonable smear weigh? You need to divide the portion you are eating by the carbs per 100g Mat.

Low carb? Surely its all about your bg levels and what your meter says, and if Lovelife can eat it and only get a .9 mmol/L rise in levels then it sounds fine to me. I see no point in low carbing for the sake of it, I low carb only to control my diabetes which is why I have tested and tested and tested again and again all the foods I eat and now I no longer need to as I pretty much know what I can and cant eat but very little is actually off the menu for me :D

Having said all that Nutella is not something I would eat, like Marmite I think you either love it or hate it, I cant think of a worse way to ruin some chocolate personally

Thing with chocolate spread is that you CAN spread it and put smallish amounts on. If you do, you should be fine. Chocolate has a quite low GI because the fat content slows down the absorption and thus conversion to glucose in the blood. Any nut content would also help to lower the GI.

Yes I agree Grazer...

And Sid Bonkers I think you make a good point re Low carbing as testing and testing and even more testing allows u to enjoy all kinds of food without the spikes. Though I tend to stick to most brown food(low GI)! Oh, by the way, Nutella is yummy! LOL

I'm not even going to try Nutella again, it was bad enough giving the stuff up pre-diagnosis when trying to loose weight, that stuff is the crack cocaine of the chocolate spread world :)

re : burgen bread
i know i'm new to this, only just woken up to looking after my self, but is hovis nimble better for me than burgan, with only 8.1g carbs of which sugars 0.5g. or am i going wrong again.

zippy2

That doesn't sound too bad zippy, slather butter on it too. Just be aware of how many slices you are having, Nimble as I recall is skinny and featherlight. Burgen is quite dense with lots of good stuff in it.
