Byetta side effects

:?: I'm Type 2 diabetic (diagnosed eight years ago). Tried metformin but all I got from that was violent, black diarrhea 20 times per day and I was only on one tablet a day! Put onto Gliclazide after begging doctor to take me off the poison which he'd insisted I persevere with for a whole year - phew!

Anyway since 2004 I've put on five and half stone, consequently pushing up blood blucose - hence now on maximum dose of: Pioglitazone, Gliclazide, 88ml Lantus Solostar and against my better judgment also on maximum dose of Gluclophage SR although diarrhea now only six times a day and not so violent.

I've begged Diabetic Specialist Nurse to take me off Glucophage SR but she says no 'cos if I am put onto insulin three times a day my weight will explode again. She's sending me to Mr Consultant at hospital as she thinks he can prescribe Byetta (says she can only prescribe this if I wasn't also on insulin already but she cannot do so as I'm also on Lantus).

So question is how will Byetta affect me? I've heard this too can cause diarrhea. Has anyone had any experience? Also just how much weight can you expect to lose on Byetta? I've heard only a few pounds in a few months but the nurse is insistent I won't be allowed to stay on it if I don't have a significant loss, ie stones rather than pounds. She's also trying to bully me into having a gastric band fitted.

Welcome to the Forum.

There is an extensive thread entitled 'BYETTA' in the 'Diabetes Medication and Drugs section where you will find many questions and answers about the drug. Have a read there.

As for the specific questions here, Byetta as with any drug will have different effects on each individual. I have been on Byetta for nearly 2 yrs now and have little or no side effects. I have lost over 5 1/2 stone, improved Bg levels so that now all are well within my personal target levels. My health and fitness have inmproved enourmously as a result and basically as far as I am concerned it is a fabulous drug.......however, dietary changes are a must if you wish to get the best out of Byetta, it is in no way a 'magic bullet.'

As for the Gastric band......try Byetta and diet changes first. Many have had significant results using this drug.

Ask about Victoza (liraglutide). Its not insulin. Its a once a day injection that only works when it detects excess glucose in the blood. Has the added benefit of helping you to lose weight (although they are not able to claim that as it is still being tested for weight loss in non-diabetics). I believe PCTs will only approve it for obese type 2 due to cost but the long term benefits of losing weight are obvious. Of course you would have to come off insulin. No side effects that I know of. Dont believe anyone who says it gives you cancer. You would qualify for it on your weight problems. Check out the website Victoza.com. There has been some discussion on this site which you could search for.

I'll take a look. I think the thing here is that the NHS don't really want to spend much money if they can help it.

If Victoza works without insulin that would be better - if I'm not careful I will be so full of holes that when I drink water it will be like a scene from Laurel and Hardy with the water pouring out the holes - ha, ha, ha!

OMG 20 times black diarrhea - it's really bad.
