Well done Ken - keep up the good work. My own weight loss has slowed right down, but then I have exceeded the target I set myself and I am down to 13st 2lbs - and the last time I weighed that was 1971 !!

Has anyone on Byetta travelled and changed time zones. How do you balance when to inject if you are say 6 hours behind the UK when you land?

Hi Vivienne,

Last year we were in Cape Cod, 5 hours behind the UK, so on the day we arrived it just meant a bigger gap between the two injections. Then normal gaps from day 2 onwards. It's ok as long as the gap is a minimum of 6 hours. It really doesn't matter if there is a long gap once in a while. A normal day for me would be breakfast at 8am and evening meal at 8pm, so 12 hours between injections. But on a weekend I might have a late breakfast at 10am and evening meal at 5pm if we are going somewhere, so a 7 hour gap.

Just remember to pack your Byetta in your hand luggage, even if you won't need it on the flight. If you pack it in hold luggage it will most likely get smashed.
 
Hi, I have been diagnosed since I was 48 am now 53. At first was on metformin after trying to controll it with diet alone and failing dismally and then went onto metformin and then added glyklazide and now I am being told that because my blood test revealed an overall score of 13 I should try this drug which I am told will also help me to lose this weight which is not only from my ilness but I gave up the fags eighteen months ago which has made me stuff my face!
Has anyone tried this drug and has it helped, I keep hearing horror stories about acute pancreatitis and even death but my diabetic nurse assures me this is so low and it will do so much more good than harm. I am to start the injections tomorrow and am really very afraid not only of the needles but also of the drug and side effects. My daughtger tells me that I should think about what can happen without it and how my legs will suffer and my eyesight which is getting very poor acutally. Sorry for the essay it just feels good to type to someone lol

hiya jude have you finally got my email i sent let me know well done ken on weight loss going ok on byetta lost 4lb today at weigh in no sickness been on byetta 3months just started 10mg fourth month pen total weight loss stone up to now keep going jude it worth a try look at me second time on byetta and up to now its working gotta go need to have early night getting hair done tommorrow a treat for me xx :lol:

Thanks Dennis, I've always carried medication in hand luggage, hold luggage gets lost too often!
I guess I'll need a newly updated Doctor's letter too.

Well, I said that I would report back once I had been back for my 6 month check at the hospital.

Doing really well - lost 21/2 stone averaging roughly 1lb a week!!! - hb1ac down to an amazing 6.6 AND now going to be weaned off my nightime lantus, hopefully leaving me insulin free Yehhhhhh - been told if I manage to come off the lantus then I will get my driving licence back permantly rather than having to renew every 3 years (hope all works out ok) .

Due to go back in October to see specialist diabetic nurse - she is so supportive and kind.
Want to budge another 2 stone - anything extra will be a bonus - but trying to make sensible goals for myself as don't want to trip myself up (if you see where I am coming from)
Good old BYETTA eh!!!!!!

Hi Joy and welcome to you.

Unfortunately Byetta can have side effects for some people, but not all. But I can put your mind to rest over pancreatitis. According to the statistics you are actually far LESS likely to suffer from pancreatitis when taking Byetta than someone who does not take Byetta. There was a scare story put out about a year ago by an American journalist that several people who were taking Byetta had died from Pancreatitis. The authorities (without checking the accuracy of the story) immediately told the manufacturers to put a warning about pancreatitis in their literature. Later when the situation was investigated properly it was found that the number of deaths from pancreatitis in the western world averages 1 death per 23,000 people. But in patients who are on Byetta medication the figure is 1 death per 250,000 people. So the statistics say that you are 10 times less likely to suffer from pancreatitis if you take Byetta.

hiya all, well i was doing well on byetta the first time but sadly i had to spend a few days at the hospital with my dad, stayed there night and day for 3 days. sadly he passed away. but as you can imagain when at the hospital i wasnt eating and after he passed didnt eat much then either. so started on it again. the sickness is back just like the first time. am on the 5mg again. at least i no that it does get better in time and the sickness will get better. anyway good luck every one take care x

Hi Tina,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It makes it very difficult to concentrate on yourself and keeping you healthy at a time like this. The good news is that I have heard several stories of people who have come off Byetta for a while and then re-started. The nausea does come back, but usually not as bad as the first time and it doesn't seem to last as long. It seems that the body recognises Byetta as something that it has had before so it acclimatises quicker the second time.

I have just joined this group. I thought I would let people know that after years of struggling to control my weight, sugar levels and eating I have recently ( 2 months ago) started on Byetta added to my insulin. I was worried about starting it as I had heard there are side effects. However apart from slight nausea a couple of times it has been great. I have lost 5 lbs in weight so far, I am hardly ever hungry and my blood sugar levels are 5 to 9 instead of in the high teens and twenties. I have been able to decrease my insulin a little as well.So, in my case Byetta is all good news.The injections dont hurt at all and you only inject a few drops with a tiny needle.

hi denise thanks for the advice, i hope this time will be as good or better than the last time. i no it was hard to worry about my self with all the worrying about me dad. well its still not any easier but my dad would be moaning at me if he knew i wasnt looking after myself. so here goes the second time round. take care x

I'm so very glad I found this site - Ive been on Metformin for 2 years and at my annual check up last week it was suggested I go on to Byetta. As its fairly new I've found this thread very interesting and must admit my mind is easier now so I will go ahead with it. I'm terrified of needles so this is going to be a bit of a challenge for me.

hiya dennis were getting our kitchens altered by the council so we have to pack everything in our bedroom dont know if its good thing having fridge in bedroom might sleep walk to fridge :lol: gonna take 5 weeks so i have packed all my one bedroom bungalow into the bedroom probably have to live on microwave meals as they are knocking a wall out so if i dont come on often you know why by the way dennis i have just started 4 month 10mg pen feel fantastic losing weight but slow and bloods are between 5 to 7 so very happy no sickness and my ibs is great so so pleased so you see second time and feeling good so there is hope for the second time of trying gotta go now dennis need to wash hair xx
