BYETTA

Well, the nurse said I was to continue to take the insulins but at half the usual dosage - currently 30u for the Lantus and 10-30u for the Novorapid. I am to take the Byetta concurrently with the insulin.
One week on and I have already dropped the lunch time insulin - it was only 8 units halved to 4 and I thought that amount was not worth the bother - it doesn't seem to have affected my BG levels.

My weight at the clinic was 104.4kg, now reading 102.3kg so 4.5 lbs gone already!

I'm quite liking this Byetta - I do still get the slightest of queasy feelings at times but nothing to really affect me. Get a bit more heartburn in the evening which I handle with 150mg ranitidine.

If I can continue with this rate of weight loss and I can ditch the insulin I will be very happy.

Woo hoo got my best birthday pressie ever. Hospital doc has said Ok to the Byetta and I have to go on a course in 4 weeks to learn how to use it and then I shall be up and running. I don't mind the wait as I'm on holiday tomorrow for 3 weeks.

Great news Jane.....and on your Birthday too.......... :D :D :D

Congratulations to you and I hope you can now enjoy the rest of your Birthday. Well done.

Jpg.

Great news from you too........keep us posted how you get on. The more success stories we see the better we like it. Great weight loss and dropping the Insulin dose. There are others on here who did as you, they are still off the Insulin and have never looked back.

Hi girlygirl,

There is a byetta thread on the Diabetes Medication and Drugs board. (Only 109 pages long :) ) where you may find some help. I seem to recall that some Byetta users find that ginger based products help.

Have a read through some of it and you will find a wealth of information there.

Hope this helps,
Catherine.

I started on Byetta today done my first injection and it didnt hurt one bit ( needle went in my middle) had to watch a video on utube to prime the pen as the instructions in the booklet were not that clear. well here goes i hope i dont feel to sick for the first few days i am on the 5mg dose to start off. doc only gave me 1 pen lasts 30 days and i got to ring her on monday to tell her how i am doing .

I've just been advised to use Byetta in order to lower my sugar levels and reduce wieght by my Diabetes registar and specialist nurse. I'm a bit concerned as my diabetic specialist nurse told me that it hasn't been licenced for use with insulin (I'm using Lantus at 100 units and Novorapid at 30, 18 and 40 per day). I'd like to know if anyone else is using this and how safe it's use is with insulin.

You are correct that there is very little solid scientific information about the use of Insulin and Exenatide (Byetta) together. Nevertheless, there are people here and elsewhere using the two drugs together and anecdotaly have had great success with that combination. Most have either drastically reduced the Insulin or even come off it altogether. Hopefully we may get one or two of them pipe up with their experiences. Depends who is still around and posting.

As I almost had to go onto Insulin along with my Byetta because of anti-Cancer drugs decimating my Bg control I researched it intensively. Spoke to my Endocrinologist and DSN at length.......I would have been quite happy to use both if I had to. My personal opinion only.

So CM, if you are worried after reading up on it and reading the success stories here, and elsewhere.......discuss it with your GP/Consultant/DSN.......then make your own mind up.

Byetta - How long....

Hi,

I've just had my first dose of Byetta and I am wondering how long it will be before I find out if I'm going to be struck with the nausea side effect? I have an absolute phobia of being sick and so I'm a little concerned about this particular side effect  I'm determined to utilise the positive thinking thing, and keep telling myself it won't affect me and that all will be fine! For any Byetta users, if you did experience nausea/sickness, how long did it take to appear?

Many thanks.

Maddie

The side effects are only possible, NOT mandatory. If you do get the effects then as most have found, eating or drinking products containing Ginger can often suppress the effects. I used to nibble a Ginger biscuit with good effect.

As for when it appears....... that is not a question I can answer. Many find that the effects come on immediately, some after a few days, sometimes weeks. We are all different.

I drink lots of mint tea. I've been on the 10mg for just over 2 weeks and sometimes out of the blue I feel nauseous.

Well, I'm on Lantus and Novorapid combined with Byetta but I have to say I feel a bit of a fraud as my insulin doses are much smaller than yours - pre Byetta they were 24u Lantus and Novorapid 16u, 8u and 22u. Despite Lilly's advice it does seem as though there is a growing consensus amongst diabetes specialists, presumably as a result of informal trials, that a combination of the two has real advantages - not just short-term and clinical, but long term and financial as well.

The good news for me is that my BMs have improved, and my weight has dropped by half a stone in 10 days. Up until last night I had very little nausea, just a slight queasiness that was easy to cope with. However, at about 2 o'clock this morning I woke up with moderate nausea - not enough to make me vomit but enough to make me think I might be having a hypo. My sugars at bedtime were 10.9, due to over-indulgence in pizza about 8 o'clock in the evening so I reckon the Byetta was "punishing" me for my gluttony. It seems the drug has some brute force methods of making you eat less - I'll be sure not to overdo it again.

To minimise nausea I reckon you should take the Byetta about 15 minutes before eating and *don't* be tempted to overindulge. Peppermint tea I find is helpful but my local pharmacist reckoned Buscopan (actually for migraine-induced nausea) is good.

Buscopan. (HYOSCINE BUTYLBROMIDE)

Buscopan is used to relieve bladder or intestinal spasms. :?:

Maybe the Pharmacist meant this particular drug which contains Hyoscine Hydrobromide, a different medication altogether. Kwells tablets contain the active ingredient hyoscine hydrobromide, which is a type of medicine called an antimuscarinic (or anticholinergic). It is used to prevent travel sickness.

Might be worth checking first with the GP just in case.

I was at work when I wrote that and didn't have access to the actual tablets, I'm back at work again but I'll check tonight. The name was similar to Buscopan and it definitely said on the box "for migraine-induced nausea" - no mention of IBS.

I haven't needed to take any yet, by the way.

Thanks for that jpg.
Let us know what it actually is, as anything which can help relieve the symptoms has to be good to know about. The more info we get on here the better.
