I am 10 days in with the 5mg pen> Alls well having lost 10 lbs but i cannot get my blood sugars under 13. they range from 13 to 15 pre breakfast. I am low carbing (i think), just a couple of slices of bread and 1 potato a day. I have an agreement with my consultant that if i get three consecutive 15+ readings, i come off of Byetta and back on Lantus, which worries me as the weight is coming off.
I was thinking as its going OK, no real side effects, has anyone gone to the 10mg pen early, ie, halfway through the first month?

First of all can you give me an example of what a typical daily diet consists of. We may be able to help you avoid those highs. (bread and spuds doesn't exactly sound low carb to me ?)

I think whoever your Consultant is needs to go back to charm school. You put somebody on a new (to them) drug and then heap loads of pressure on them by giving them a dealine Re Bg levels in the first month. Byetta at 5ug is an acclimatisation dose and only becomes more effective at the higher dose 10ug. I think that is disgraceful. He is obviously worried about the cost more than anything, Byetta is vastly more expensive than any Insulin ! Insulin of course has the added side effect of possibly making you put on weight as well.

A typical daily diet:-
Breakfast. 2 x cups coffee, small bowl porridge oats, 1 slice toast., occasionaly bacon and egg
Lunch, tends to be a sandwhich, probably ham or salad on wholemeal
Dinner. Lamb stew, or steak or fish, 1 potatoe and veg
as of today i have lost 12 lbs since January 1.

Hi Ron.
Thanks for that. There was a time I couldn't tolerate ANY carbohydrates at all. Now is different, I can tolerate small amounts.

The things marked in Red may need to be cut out, or just reduced. they may be contributing to the Bg levels. The weight loss is good, but it isn't everything. Bg levels are much more important.

Doesn't seem too bad, are you on any other medications which might perhaps affect your Bg levels. We could check them out for you.

This is not a reply for anyone, just thought it might be good news to share

2 years ago I was put onto Byetta as my oral medication and diet was doing nothing for my bs results, for about 10 days I had the nausea but after that all has gone swimmingly. In fact 6 months ago when I had a Consultants appointment she advised that I should not lose anymore weight. I had lost just over 2.5 stone.

Today I have had my 6 month Consultants review and my weight is exactly the same as 6 months ago, 10 stone. I am no angel I have treats and do not low carb to any great extent, just cut back.

My hba1c today was 5.9 - six months ago 6.6, I am chuffed.

Take care everyone and enjoy the New Year.

Hi - This is my first visit to this forum. In reply to the question on Byetta. I have been on it for over a year and found it excellent. I lost 3 stone with real ease - most of which was a result of being on Insulin. Unfortunately my sugar control got worse recently and I am now back on the dreaded Insulin, but am continuing to take Byetta. This is not lisenced at present but it has helped my weight gain to be lower.
The advantages of Byetta:
wight loss
not feeling hungry
no major side effects that I noticed

Disadvantages:
Injections
have to keep it cool
have to remember to take it at the right time
It became less effective over time (for me)

Good luck anyway
Kate

Indapamide has a particular side effect of hyperglycaemia. (High Blood Glucose levels)
Asthma Inhalers are usually steroid based, this can affect your blood glucose levels depending on the frequency of use.

I would suggest you discuss these particular Meds with your GP, there may be alternatives without the side effects.

Hi All,

I am wondering if anyone else has had the problem that I have experienced. 7 out of 10 (5mg) injections I went hypo. I did not use any other diabetes medications and only 1 injection per day at dinner. After the first 5 times, I drank a regular Coke with dinner and still went hypo. I would take the injection and eat right away. I did lose weight and I felt it would work very well if I could stop the hypos.

For now, I have stopped it until I get to the doctor next Monday and ask him about it. I even called the Byetta helpline and they seemed perplexed and took all my personal information to report it, to whom they were reporting I don't know.

So anyone have any ideas? I thought maybe I was doing something wrong, injecting and eating, but the Byetta person said I was doing it right and to discuss this with my doctor.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Hi mspoohbear.

only 1 injection per day at dinner

I am slightly confused by your post. Can you tell me why you are only injecting once daily with Byetta.

It is designed to be injected twice daily with each of two main meals.

Another question is what did your meal consist of when you injected.

I have a bmi of 41.1 and I am becoming increasingly insulin resistant and have been type 2 for 28 years and unsulin dependent for 23 years. My consultant will not prescribe byetta, but they won;t explain why. My diabetic nurse feels it would benefit me and is pushing for it, but to no avail as yet, Can you help me with some ideas as to why not?

You need to push for an explanation as to why not from the Consultant concerned. It may well be down simply to cost ! Another reason is that you have also to be uncontrolled whilst on maximum doses of oral meds.

You sound like a prime candidate for Byetta. Keep pushing for the drug or maybe even something like Victoza which is a once daily injection and appears also to be very effective.

Hi viv.
Nice to hear from you again, Happy New Year to you BTW. Sounds like you could do with some better luck...... :(

It's took us 10 minutes to sort your post out before I could answer, there was enough space between part of the post and the rest of it to put the M6 Motorway........ All fixed now !

Doesn't sound like it's the Byetta but I am sure the tests will tell all. There is always Victoza, which is a once daily injection. that seems very effective.

Let us know how you get on.

Ken

I had my appointment to see the specialist diabetic nurse, initially I went on the pretense that I would be going on Byetta, however with my active life (Carer, University student and looking after my disabled son too) they said Victoza would be the better option, because of it only being a once a day injection. Are there any people on this forum who use this drug? if so what problems have they had on using this?

There is a thread in this section entitled Victoza......that is all the information we have on it at the moment. Take a look.

hate using injections and people who look at you as if you're a junkie when you have to do them in public! Diabetic sweets n choc.....YUK
Well it's now almost 5 weeks since i started Byetta alongside Lantus and Glucophage
Initially I felt really sick but have stuck with it and now feel fine. :D
I have lost almost a stone and a half(although I must say, I have been dieting too). My BG has dropped from between 16-18 to between 6.1 and 10.3 still not ideal but I think you'll agree, far better than the previous. :D I start Byetta 10 today and I'm hoping for even better results , However i've been warned the sickness may start again :(
