Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Thank you both. I do appreciate your replies. I find it's quite an alone experience being a diabetic, even though I have been one for 7 years as I don't really know anyone else experiencing it. So I feel reassured by what you say. I did test when I felt jittery but it wasn't low and that's what confused me. I felt it was low. Byetta is a powerful drug, as you say, Ken, so hopefully I wil get used to it. It's only been a week. Thanks.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Diabetes Nurse wasn't happy with the extent of the abdominal pain so I had to go and get amylase tested to check on the pancreas AND come off Byetta meanwhile. I am really disappointed because it was having a good effect on my blood sugars. The doctor explained that you can't mess around with pancreatitis as it has a 40% mortality rate so I guess she's right. Anyone else had this problem?

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Slaing.

What can I say.
Obviously they need to take you off the Byetta for now. As they say you don' t mess around if it might be Pancreatitus. It is rare, but can happen.
Don't despair, just wait and see what the test shows. I hope for your sake it isn't that. I hope in a short while you will be back and tell us it was all a scare.
Abdominal pain etc can be scary, because you always think the worst. Been there, for a wee while myself.

Let us know how you get on and best wishes to you.
Ken.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Everyone

Just a quick update, had my 6mth review at the Hospital and HB1AC is 6.6%, as it is now down from my inital reading of 8.2% they are happy to let me go back to my GP care. I have only lost another 1kg making a grand total since October of 2.5kg. I seem to have the medical profession scratching their heads as they can't understand why I am not losing weight, despite my appettite having reduced greatly!Although I have PCOS they don't seem to think that this has anything to do with me losing any weight!! Oh and the blood tests came back normal for Thyroid and everything else!!

The good news is my specialist has written to my GP and said I am to remain on the Byetta whilst my sugar levels remain good, as he said if they took me off Byetta the only alternative was Insulin and then I would gain even more weight!!

I've gone back to injecting 15-20 mins before my meal as the only thing I got from leaving it an hour before injecting was terrible indigestion!!

The only helpful suggestion they could come up with was I don't eat enough throughout the day to be able to burn anything off!!

This is what I normally eat in a day,I would appreciate anyone looking at it and seeing where I am going wrong!

I do exercise 5 days out of the 7 but now they are suggesting that I snack between my meals and have a piece of fruit with some nuts or vegetable sticks dipped in Hummous/Peanut Butter/Soft Cheese or an extra yogurt.

B'fast
1 slice of gluten free grain toast
2 Eggs scrambled

Lunch
Salad with ham/chicken/prawns or homemade soup
Yogurt, sometimes a piece of fruit

Dinner
Lean Meat/Fish - portion no bigger than palm of my hand
2 portions of Vegetables
Occasionally a new potato

I drink lots of water and herbal teas but just can't shift any weight! :?

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

hi fiona35.

Reading through your menu there is nothing there that would make me cringe. Maybe the Bread ?
I took a look at your profile and Meds. You are taking Pioglitazone I believe ?

PIOGLITAZONE
Possible side effects: gastro-intestinal disturbances, weight gain, oedema, anaemia, headache, visual disturbances, dizziness, arthralgia, hypoaesthesia, haematuria, impotence; less commonly hypoglycaemia, fatigue, insomnia, vertigo, sweating, altered blood lipids, proteinuria; see also Liver Toxicity above

Perhaps you should discuss this with your HCP's and remind them of it's unfortunate SE ? I stopped all those weight gain prone drugs before going on to Byetta. I also reduced the other meds too.
Weight gain is not an issue with Metformin.
Are you taking any other Drugs for anything else ?

Hope this helps.

Ken. :D

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Ken

Two weeks ago they asked me to stop taking the Pioglitazone in case that was causing no weight loss but as of yet nothing has changed!!

I have nibbled a few snacks today - mainly about 5 almonds at each serving so maybe this might do something!

Thanks for looking at my menu and not cringing!

Somehow I can't quite convince my brain to give up the - carbs - at brekky!! But maybe I can try half a slice instead.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Ken

Sorry if it was a bit confusing, when I first started taking Byetta I injected 10 mins before eating so I wouldn't feel sick. My Consultant said I wasn't losing weight becasue I wasn't injecting a full hour before eating so I started to inject an hour before eating. No weight loss but I did suffer awful indigestion!

As it appears injecting one hour before meals isn't working either I have gone back to injecting 15-20 mins before eating and no longer suffering the indigestion.

Hope it makes sense now!

Fiona :)

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi fiona35

Just a thought on the lack of weight loss - it is possible to eat too little - did you know that? The body starts to hold on to weight if we do not eat enough and hence no weight loss.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Jude

I wasn't aware that not eating enough would make me not lose any weight but the last few days I have made a consious effort to eat 6 smaller meals rather than my usual 3 meals, I've also been including more nuts and seeds and this morning I jumped on the scales and its actually moved downwards!!

Fingers crossed this might work!

Hi Saraboy,

It's always disappointing to hear of somone for whom a medicine hasn't worked, or who have had a reaction to it, and you certainly have our sympathies. However, I was a bit concerned to see from your profile that you have diabetes insipidus. If that is correct then Byetta would be a completely inappropriate treatment for your doctor to have prescribed, as would any of the other treatments that are designed to deal with high blood sugar levels. In fact the action of Byetta in slowing down gastric emptying could have catastrophic effects for anyone suffering from DI, whether of the neurogenic or nephrogenic variety.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi everyone

Been on Byetta for approx 4 months now and feel am an old hand at it!!!!!

Weight loss has slowed down to a steady rate rather than the dramatic 20 odd pounds at first

My prob is that although i vary the injection sites, am starting to bruise some being quite colourful as well. For the first few months it was fine, but for the last few weeks i hav little bruises over the fronts of my legs. I dont push the pen down to hard on my leg, and it was fine for the first couple on months

I did try to inject into my stomach to give my legs a break, but the dreaded sickness returned with a vengeance, god it was awful, tried it a few more times but nope still sick, so have gone back to the legs am afraid. Am now injecting on the side of my thighs to give the fronts a rest.

Anyone have any ideas, my DN says its a hazard of injecting and i have to get used to it but maybe am bein a baby but the hurt!!!!

thanks in advance
