Hi guys sorry haven t been on in a while and hope every1 doing aswell as they can :) so I've a c peptide Wednesday and don t know what to expect tbh a little nervous but excited at the same time, looking forward to finally finding out for sure how my pancreas is working, which i suspect not very good.over the past couple of months my sugars have been alot wayward compared to when i was diagnosed type 1 july of 2015.I also went for a follow up appointment for suspected maculopathy in nov and still have nothing through the post of my scan results fuming a little tbh, I 've rang about 3 times and know1 seems to know anything, its as if the results of my scan have been lost!!! still waiting

I wouldn't get too excited about the c-peptide result. Yes it might show you are still making some insulin, but really so what? You still have to get on with carb counting and injecting etc.
Sorry if that sounds hugely negative but mine showed I still make small amounts of insulin, it makes little difference really, I just inject smaller doses than some others. I still get unexpected highs and lows sometimes like everyone else too.

I'm excited because atm i m in limbo with my diagnosis, looking forward to the carb counting because atm i m on nothing!!!have to control my sugars with exercise so insulin for me would be a great help

So is the consultant saying your c-peptide has to be a certain level to give you insulin? Surely if you are a confirmed type 1 having to exercise to control levels you should be on insulin????

Hi. The c-peptide test is of most use when trying to see whether your output is High or Low. It doesn't give an accurate measure, but can indicate the need for insulin or not. I had mine done privately when my surgery hadn't a clue on my diabetes type and didn't care. I turned out to be just inside the bottom of the range which confirmed to me I had low insulin and not a typical T2 but really a LADA. Since then my insulin needs have increased so I suspect a new test would show me now to be below the minimum due to the honeymoon effect over the last few years.

If you need insulin, you need insulin - whether it's because you make none yourself or because you make a little still but it's not sufficient.

I hope the c peptide test is only one of a number of considerations.

Yep but this hooneymoon period is coming to an end for sure

my sugars have been all over the place, reaching 14s,my last hba1c was 6.1 but no doubts that the next will be higher, pancreas if giving in now for sure

I went into talk to him about feeling the need to go onto insulin due to my control not been as good as at the beginning of my diagnosis,So he sent me for c-peptide test,I wanna be able to control ,y diabetes better and feel now's the time insulin should be reintroduced

Sorry, i don't understand, so you came off insulin all together?? .. how long have you not been using insulin for? you have been trying to get your sugars down using diet and exercise alone?! this doesn't make sense... If you are Type One you need insulin, yes your insulin intake may have been lowered due to the honey moon period but to just not have any insulin at home to use seeing as your sugar levels have been in the double figures is not right?!

So i was diagnosed july 2015 with type 1 diabetes after having been in hospital with DKA.I was then put on long lasting insulin and due to having hypos on 2 units or so I was taken off insulin altogether in sept. From then till now no insulin,no medication and Hbalc's haven t been above 6.1 since with my last been 6.1 but these last couple of months i ve been hitting highs previously never seen when testing

Exercise and diet was working but my exercise levels have dropped massively, need to back into it for sure :::))

For me, the c-peptide test put an end to 3 years of the doctors assuming I was T2 and berating me for having ever higher HbA1c results. It showed that rather than having insulin resistance I was failing to produce it. Think of it as a diagnostic tool and a way to establish the correct treatment.

So when you say levels rising, what figures are you getting and have you discussed them with your team? Sorry to be nosy but I'm fascinated by the idea they are using this result to decide when you start insulin.

Despite being on the max doses of Metformin and Glicazide, plus a daily dose of long-acting insulin, my HbA1c was up over 85. The did a c-peptide test saying it was 'very unlikely' I was T1. When the result came back that I was indeed T1, they put me on a standard T1 regime of basal + rapid and the next HbA1c was 55.

So you were treated at type 2 so cpeptide makes sense, op knows they are type 1 so why is the c-peptide needed?
