I have type 2 diabetes and high serum calcium which is going up I know that people with low calcium levels are encouraged to eat calcium rich foods .I eat lots of high calcium foods so I wondered whether that could be the cause of the problem .If anyone has any information I would be very interested

I am hesitant to ask, but will anyhow… postmenopause?
The lack of oestrogen be a cause of low serum calcium levels. No matter how much calcium in diet. Have you been prescribed a supplement of calcium and vit D?

Personal opinion: I doubt that most cases of either extra low or extra high serum calcium are purely related to calcium in the food eaten. What matter more are: 1. Bioavailability (as in -eat as much chalk as you like but it's unlikely to strengthen your bones) 2). Other vitamins and hormones which assist/regulate use of serum calcium for bone re-building (bones are constantly being re-absorbed and re-built).

@Pipp I wonder whether your GP would prescribe Colecalciferol? As I am supposed to avoid sun rays. I am permanently prescribed this.
It boosts Vitamin D and Calcium.

Thanks, but I think it is @carty the OP looking for answers. Though Colecalciferol could be a solution for her.

edit: apologies, my error. O P has high calcium levels not low, so supplemets of calcium would be NOT be appropriate.

Pipp, I think @carty says in her OP she is concerned about high calcium levels, not low, so supplementing further might not be the best idea?

@carty - Have you had your parathyroid tested in recent times? That going off-song can lead to serum calcium levels.

What is your Doc suggesting you do about it?

Thank you. That was a very poor error of mine I will correct.

My GP was very thorough and did parathyroid test I had 24 hour urine test and regular blood tests as it wasn't very high he was happy to keep an eye on the levels but over the last year they have gone up a bit higher ,so the new GP has had a raft of bloods done ,I have not got results yet but I just wondered if my diet was having an affect .Thanks for the help
