Can a kidney infection increase blood sugar levels. I was sent by ambulance a week Today to hospital as my sugar level was 17.9. Waiting in A&E 14 hours before I saw a Dr. BSL had fallen to 11 prescribed anti biotics and sent home. My Son bought me a kit for Christmas used it for the 1st time Tonight and it’s 15.2. i have no clue what I’m doing and no ones told me. Just diagnosed me with diabetics put me on medication and leaving me to it. I don’t have a clue.

Hi, it sounds like me and you have the same team, I was basically told the same myself, but from the small amount of information I was given by the team a year or so ago an from what the good people of this forum have been saying I’d say that any kind of infection can cause blood sugars to rise, by how much I don’t know, but obviously I’m not a doctor or an expert on this by any means so the advice I’ve been given quite a lot is to speak to your team if you’re able to get in contact with them, and also the advice with the people on here is also very good, but again they will tell you that they’re not doctors either and to see your gp or team if possible. Hope you can get it rectified. Oh and what kit are you referring to? You should always have some ketone strips available to yourself (which I only knew about from the guys and girls of this forum) speak to your gp like I did to put them on a prescription for yourself

Thanks Carl it can be pretty scary when you have no clue.

I know, tell me about it, I had to learn to carb count, learn how many units to inject at night of long lasting insulin it was quite scary at first but once you get the hang of it you’ll be ok, plus you have the kind people of this forum to give you some advice also.

Hi Marcia, the good news is, if you had been given lots of advice from the medics it would likely be wrong, much better to learn what you need to know from the good folks here, don’t panic, take your time and read read read would be my advice, then ask ask ask, best of luck.

Hi Marcia and welcome to the forums.

You've posted your query on a thread by a T1 who is asking about altering his insulin dose so I feel you would get much better advice if I (or another moderator) moved your post (and the replies to it) to its own thread? Are you OK with this?

Hi @MarciaJones31

Your posts and the replies are now in their own separate thread.

AS others have already said, infections can push up blood sugars.

Can I check I;ve understood you correctly - the diagnosis came at the same time as you were diagnosed with the kidney infection?

Most diagnoses of diabetes come with a blood test which measures something called an hba1c, which reflects your average blood sugar over the last 3 months. If it's more than 48 you are diabetic, but its value (some people get diagnosed at more than 100) would give you a measure of how diabetic you are. In particular, it would give you an idea of how much your current kidney infection is influencing your current high blood sugars.

I'll let some T2s give you the low down on things you can do to control your diabetes and reassure you that a diabetes diagnosis is not the end of the world.

Once more, welcome to the forums.
