People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
Here is a link to an article on the DUK website recently:
http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/New ... -diabetes/

As a paid up member of DUK I came across this little gem about a Grapefruit ingredient and it's possible beneficial effects for Type 2 Diabetics. I read this and was startled as Grapefruit and it's juice can be deadly to anyone who is taking certain Statin's. As many type 2's are automatically put on Statin's when diagnosed members who love eating Grapefruit need to be aware of the danger. The particular ingredient mentioned may well turn out to be safe, but Grapefruit is certainly not for some people. Me being one of them !!! :(

Here is a series of extracts from an article about this subject:
Although eating fruit may seem harmless, drinking a glass of grapefruit juice or eating a grapefruit around the time you take your statin may be deadly.

Grapefruit contains the compound bergamottin, which interacts with certain enzyme systems in the body, such as cytochrome P-450 and P-glycoprotein. These enzyme systems are responsible for breaking down statins, as well as other drugs, into more usable chemicals and transporting them in the body.
When grapefruit juice is consumed at or around the time you take your statin, the components in grapefruit prevent these enzyme systems from breaking down the drug, causing the drug to accumulate in high amounts in the body. This can be very dangerous and can cause a variety of health problems, such as liver damage or a rare condition called rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle and kidney damage).

So far, the only statins significantly affected by this interaction are:
atorvastatin (Lipitor®)
lovastatin (Mevacor®)
simvastatin (Zocor®)

Other statins do not seem to demonstrate the same, profound effect with grapefruit as seen with the other statins. These would include:
rosuvastatin (Crestor®)
pravastatin (Pravachol ®)
fluvastatin (Lescol ®)

Another good reason for reading (and periodically re-reading) the package inserts that come with your meds!

So if one desperately wanted some grapefruit for some reason, missing a statin for a couple of nights, then having the grapefruit during the day between would probably be OK.

Not necessarily planning to do this - but I have already missed the odd simvastin at nightime, and my cholesterol still came down to 3.5 from 6.0 in three months, so it might be an option?

Hi Romola.

I too love Grapefruit and the juice. Since I was informed of this I haven't touched either. I am not prepared to take the risk.

If you want to eat Grapefruit I suggest you discuss it with your GP. Maybe you could change to one of the Statins thast doesn't have the problem.

Unfortunately people who are taking felodopine for high blood pressure, which I should imagine quite a few diabetics are doing should also avoid grapefruit and its juice. Double strike here!!

Just a few minutes flicking through the BNF will show that Grapefruit and its juice have just about more inter-reactions with prescribed drugs than just about any other substance.

All I can say is that I'm really glad its grapefruit and not raspberries.

lol I am glad it isn't strawberries and blueberries
