Good to learn and yet another benefit of eating fruit ladies! :)

I can but seem to have to have a protien 'chaser' to stop my BG going through the roof. I read somewhere that protien slows down the body's absorption of glucose and that an apple is digested quickly in about 1/2 hour. I find a boiled egg a few minutes after an apple seems to stop the peaks & troughs.

I might just try the cheese and apple thing.

I usually can't eat fruit as it either spikes my BG or gives me the runs (it's too late at nigh to spell the proper word  )

Anyway, some other medication this week has made me constipated - such an unusual occurance that I am delighting in eating the non spiking fruits, blueberries and cream etc.

But apples raise the bg, so I will experiment tomorrow with apple and cheese, it's a lovely combination and I'll look forward to the treat...

Such a sad life I lead

Apples are one of my mainstays. I carry one around with me everywhere and thankfully don't have a problem with increased blood glucose from them. I keep an A&E one on hand to stablize my bg after a hypo- since it's a slow acting carb. :D

Apples are fairly high in fiber and are decent on the low glycemic index.
What size apple are you eating? I use the small gala apples; the kid size ones. They have about 15g of carbs. The larger apples can have up to 30g in one apple. :( Not fair, eh?

The suggestion of the other's are good too. Adding protein or fiber to slow down the digestion process is excellent. Make sure the cheese is true cheese; not the highly processed stuff or you won't get much benefit from it. For fiber you could try an Oat Cake, just one so as not to overload the carbs. Lovely with apples! YUM!

1 medium apple (3 inches in diameter): 21 grams effective (net) carbohydrate plus 4.5 grams fiber and 95 calories.

Good Luck! :o)

I Have just tried the experiment apple with cheese. It was a medium sizes pink lady

Before eating 5.8
after 1.hour 6.7
after 1&half hour 6.4
after 2 hours 6.0

Not too bad considering -

I ate a whole large punnet of strawberries with cream the other night and I spiked at 7.8 - I very impressed as it was a LARGE punnet -but it was gorgeous

I don't know if the apple and cheese eaters amongst you are the same as me but I just can't tolerate insipid cheese...it has to be a nice strong one. So can I put a plug in for my favourite, which is Cathedral cheddar and what is (perhaps)even nicer, the half fat version tastes and feels the same as the full fat, so you can really indulge yourself...... a little :D

Well I tried this experiment again. This time forsaking Cugila's lucious pink lady in favour of a smallish braeburn apple with my extra mature cheddar.

before eating apple and cheese 6.1
one hour after eating 9.6
2.20 hours after eating 5.7
