Type 2
I am T2 diabetic and have been successful in controlling my bs on a lchf diet and am very strict with it I also exercise regularly. My problem is that in over a year I have not lost any weight. I am on heart medication for blood pressure and statins which I have taken for over 20 yrs. Are these the cause of my inability to lose weight?

it can be your medications partly, but also your insuline resistence...

fasting helps breaking that insuline resistence , by having many hours not eating your body is forced to try to eat some of its fat-reserves ... after 9 hours of fasting the body really starts to shift to the fat-energy ressource, but most people eat all day long and never stop long enough for the body to want to shift over to fat as a ressource..

I am loosing my overweight right now, eating only 1000 calories pro day ...
and at the moment the calories is about fairly shared in 3 parts one for proteins, one for carbs and one for fats...

that means I eat around 80-120 grams of carbs a day 80-120 grams of proteins a day and around 45-55 grams of fats a day as the fats are about dubble the calories pro gram as compared to both carbs and proteins.

today I got my cholesterol numbers , and luckily them have turned out to be normalized from my resent eatings, even though my doc. said it would be impossible.

most of my carbs are from vegetables green salats tomato sauces beens and a few roots though never potatoes.
I altså eat about 40-60 grams of fullgrain blackbread a day... and a few low glycemic fruits or berries like green unmatured pears and blueberries and 1 kiwi at a time , but never more than 3 peices of fruit a day and never in the same mel.. never any sugar no flour

I also do fast from 19 o´clock untill 12 o´clock the next day, to get my insuline levels down and to also have plenty of time where my blood glucose isn´t up.

this works fine for me, the first 3 days the hårdest with a bit of headace, but since that very satisfying to Loose 1 kg pro week, and also a surprisingy high level of energy.. though a few days of very tired hours ...where I let myself sleep as much as I wanted....

besides all this I drink about 2,5 to 3 liters of Water pro day... 0,5-1 liter of them with 1 spoonfull of apple cider vinegar (the mother) , very often before meals or before bedtime also to get my blood glucose down... I do think the reason apple cider vinegar Works is that it prevents some of the carb from disolving in our guts... and thereby leading to lower blood glucose... and maybe also protecting the tissue in our guts from getting inflamated and becomming in a bad state...
I eat "Skyr" an icelandic low fat high protein youghurt and skimmed milk in very Little amount , only for my coffee
I eat very little amounts of meat only 300 grams pro week, as all statistics tells that vegans and vegetarians do have only half or less the chance of getting diabetes in a lifetime... therefore I do think it is a good thing to not eat meat more than only a few times a week.. I do eat fish also one or two times a week, mostly salmon or tuna

I do eat some nuts every day (30-40 gram) too mostly paranuts which I actually buy in GB very cheap http://www.bulkpowders.dk/hele-paranodder.html

I also excersice 3 times a week and burn at least 500 calories sometimes 700 calories in the fitness center each time, and walk as much as I can everyday 5-8 kilometers... , those days that I burn most calories I eat more maybe 400 calories extra..

try counting your calories so you dont get more than 1200 calories a day when not training ... then maybe you will start loosing and maybe also find out that you eat more than you thought rignt now

Hello, just read your post and felt I had to reply.

I too was frustrated because I tried SW and WW and could not lose weight at all and wondered why. I now do 'my own thing' and am successfully losing weight although it is still a long slow process but since leaving WW I have lost 10lbs and I have done this by using Atkins meal replacement products like bars and shakes but it's working for me and that's good enough for me.

Are you also counting calories?

LCHF does not magically change how your body responds to a calorie of food. What it does for many is make it much easier not to eat so many calories because the fat makes you feel full on fewer calories. But becasue fats are so calorie dense, it is very easy to increase your calorie consumption if your're enjoying the HF portion a bit too much.

You might want to try closely tracking what you are eating for a week or so, and then intentionally your calories by 20% or so to see if you start losing.

Hi,
1st post so be gentle with me :)
Diagnosed type 2 last August and despite 4 x weekly aqua aerobics sessions, regular skiing both indoor and out and a non-sedentary job I am gaining weight not loosing it! I will take Neohdiver's advice and start a food diary. I was thinking about Slimming World, has anybody had any success with this diet?

What are you eating? What kind of diet? A calorie isn't just a calorie. The macro nutrients as well as the type of food makes a difference.

I eat VLC and high fat but dairy , saturated fat and too many nuts make me gain. That's just an example.

How many carbs and calories are you eating?

I have been low carb with medium to high fat for some time now but have found personally that in order to lose weight I also had to be very strict on calorific intake as well. If I allow my self too many calories then despite being low carb I tend to gain weight I take statins, meds for blood pressure and also steroids long term so it is a constant battle with weight.

A caloric surplus is a caloric surplus no mater what diet you're on. If you're eating your maintenance amount of calories or too much you're not going to lose weight. To put in bluntly if you're not using the amount of energy you're putting in your body it's gonna store it.

Since you're also exercising can you positively say that the lack of weight loss in due to diet or are you actually building some muscle? Start measuring your belly, upper legs, upper arms, ... and see if you gain or lose some centimeters there. As a male you'll be most likely to see changes around the belly region more rapidly.

Also did you lose weight prior or are you trying to lose weight for a year now without success? It does get more difficult to lose weight the closer you're getting to your normal body weight.

On sites like drugs.com you can look up the effects of medication or just do a google search like : "name of medication" + weight loss/retention/gain.

Don't lose heart. There is more than one way to measure fat loss. If you're eating and exercising well but putting on weight, it might be muscle. The dead giveaway is that your clothes feel looser. As well as weighing yourself, get the tape measure out and measure your waist too.

Just remember muscle weighs heavier than fat. Maybe your building muscle whilst small amounts of skiing. Long duration exercise burns fat but short can build muscle.

Beg to differ, muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. A pound is a pound, its like what weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of whatever - take your pick. Fat looks heavier than muscle is all.

When saying that muscle weighs more than fat we're comparing volume. Also the internet has come to the rescue on the question about the feathers: The feathers weigh more because you also have to carry around what you did to all those poor birds.

Hi @Ranau

I feel your pain.
Lchf allowed me to lose some weight (2 stone ish) at the beginning, but then it stalled.
Over the last 2 years i have tweaked all sorts of things. Lower protein. More water. Fewer calories. Lower carbs. Different cals on different days, various different amounts and patterns of intermittent fasting. More/less/different exercise...

Obviously felt quite a bit of frustration, especially when i concluded that the whole calorie theory was a nonsense in my case. I can eat 3,000 lchf calories without gain, and fail to lose on one lchf meal a day of approx 1,000 cals (intended to reduce insulin resistance). And the amount of exercise that had a small effect also made me ravenously hungry, and was unsustainable timewise, while having a detrimental effect on my joints.

Bummer, eh?
Interestingly, recently a different pattern of intermittent fasting is showing promise, but too early to tell for certain.

Lots of people round here have found what works for them (lchf or calories, or...) and then they suggest it will work for you.
But please be wary.
Nothing works for everyone, and following some dietary advice can have unfortunate longterm effects on metabolism.

Thanks Guys and all advice noted. I suppose I had been on the edge of diabetes since I first had my wap (heart)attack 20 years ago through statins and blood pressure medication. Bs always came up at 6.9ish on my yearly MoT and they said 'I was close' each time but of course I didn't listen or I didn't want to hear, just as they had told me to retire following my heart attack. Then I had a blood test out of the blue here in Borneo, the fasting result came in again at 6.9 but after Id had breakfast it busted the machine at something over 13. So I thought maybe at 72 I should panic. They put me on Metformin which made me ill so I sought alternatives eg LCHF and of course I have been very strict with it, my hbA1c is now down to 6.0, so I am winning without meds...apart from the heart stuff. May I say that I have always been a bit of a healthy eating freak and kept fit for many years and I cant say that I am fat. (I come off the rails occasionally with red wine) . So now having cut out my carbs almost completely for the last 6 months for no weight loss is very frustrating to say the least. Think I might try the fasting bit from 1900 to the following lunch time.

@Ranau I also found I lost weight when I was at my happiest. Maybe hormonal? Stress hormone can cause me a problem. If I stress too much about weight loss, it never happens. Some stressers loss weight, not me. I always add.

Many people who are very low carb are fine with a glass or two of dry red wine. In fact it is the most suggested alcoholic drink for a low carb diet. I would try trimming the calories from fat back a little bit.
