Hi,

I'm in the first 6 months of being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Overall I am pretty switched on with it all and despite honeymooning at the moment it's under relatively ok control.
For some reason I'm having a nightmare with it today. This evening my blood dropped to 4.0 an hour after eating. My meal consisted of around 50 carbs mainly made up of potatoes and (beef and veg and mash) I matched my insulin to carbs as I always do on an evening so can't get what's happening.

I have taken on around 230 carbs this evening in the form of sugary drinks, mcdonalds milkshake and muffin and they have gone as high as 8.3mmol and now appear to be heading back down !!
What can I do ??

Wow that's a lot of sugar! Did you exercise today? For hypo take something sugary but without fat (no milkshakes or cakes). Im not sure what I can advise you apart having coke or sugar before rapid acting insulin wears out

Tell me about it ! I've never taken on this amount if sugar ( since diabetes anyway!) I have been active today.... I think something's worked as they have gone up to 9.6 now. Still weird as they should be through the roof ! Thanks for the reply

It may go up in few hours (fat in muffins and milkshakes slows down absorption of sugar). Ive had day like this few weeks ago when I was travelling in Asia. One evening I drank few cans of coke and lemonade and my sugars didn't go over 8. It was quite scary :eek:Iwas quite active that day so it was my only explanation but stil not normal

Yeah I figured the fat played a part. I'm sure I'll regret it later ! :)

We all get days like this, if your on a basal/bolus regime ask about going on a carb counting course such as DAFNE, this will teach you to match the insulin that you inject to the carbs you eat as well as other aspects of type 1 diabetes management, the following is an on-line version of the course which by all accounts is very good:

Odd days with low's (or high's) can occur. Just monitor for today as well, because it may carry on and perhaps you will need to lower your bolus ratio for evening meals? Or it may jyst have been not quite an accurate guess for the food-do you weigh your food? Or may have been due to simple things like being more active, less stress or being so newly diagnosed your pancreas may just have given a spurt of insulin out if you are in a honeymoon period.

Feeling better today thanks. I think my lantus is too high so I'm gonna drop it. We will see... Watch this space !

That's a really useful article and confirmed a few things for me. Cheers !

do some walking ,youll be suprised what a little bit of excercise does to your blood sugar,i walk alot now at least 6 days a week, my type 1 diabetes is doing good my readings are avraging 6.3 and lower throughout the day.were before i was using buses and my readings were in the 10.0s im also eating more fruit daily.my moto is still eat the food youve always eaten, but in smaller qtys with some small boiled potatos say 2/3 times a week once you get out of the honeymoon period youll be more in control. myself ive cut out the dinner time injection.
