Hi, I'm type 1, use Freestyle Libre, Novorapid and Levimir.

I've been eating mainly convenience food so it's easy to work out the carbs so I'm sure I'm getting it right most of the time. Take Novorapid 10/15 mins before I eat usually on a 1:7 ratio as advised by my diabetic specialist at the hospital. My blood is fine for 3/4/5 hours and then I get a blood spike going up to 16/19/21 and I have to take more Novorapid to bring my blood down to level. This happens regularly, like 80% of the time that I eat. Doesn't matter what food it is, slow release carbs, fast release carbs, small meals or big.

I have emailed my diabetic specialist and all she says is maybe try a higher dose like 1:6 but I already go hypo sometimes taking 1:7 so I'm scared to try 1:6.

This is really worrying and frustrating because I am doing every thing I can to try and get this right so any help would be great thanks :)

Hello @Haliday9

Have you ever done any basal fasting tests ? your rapid insulin only lasts around 3-5 hours so a rise after the action of your quick acting has worn off would indicate a need to change your background but can only be confirmed after a basal fasting test to check: https://www.mysugr.com/en/blog/basal-rate-testing/

Hi Juicyj, thanks for replying. No I've never heard of that, I will do it once my blood is more level, it's all over the place right now but my diabetic nurse just got back to me and said I should try eating low fat low carb so I will do that and hopefully it will get better.

Thanks again :)

No worries - just to add that you need to get your basal dose right, it's the foundation for your control, without an accurate basal dose then everything else falls out of place, basal fasting tests confirm the need to adjust so it's standard practice for all t1's to check from time to time when things feel out of sync.

It's unclear from the information if the prepared product contains additional ingredients such as milk added to a dried macaroni and cheese for instance. The best way to calculate the catbs would be to prepare as instructed, weigh your portion in grams and multiply by 9.2% (or weight ÷100 x 9.2) to find the carbs.

9.2-10%=8.28 every phone has a calculator. Look at the grams per portion as a %. The item you have above is 90g. The packaging is normally for 100g portion. Unless it states differently.

For my basal rate. I look at what is happening whilst asleep. I try to hit 5-7mmol during this period. If it's higher. I increase by 1 unit. Give 48hrs before increasing again
