Hi guys,

My insulin to carb ratio has just been changed and to be honest I'm struggling to work it out.
My ratio is 1.5units of insulin to 10 grams of food. I'm honestly confused about how to work this out and I didn't even realise until my appointment was over.

I've tried some of the calculator apps but they always assume that the insulin ratio is always against 10 grams of cards.

Any help or advice would really be appreciated.

I agree with @Vicky19
This ratio must be against 10g carbs as you would be at sever risk of hypo if you ate 20g cheese (or meat or fish or nuts) with nothing else and dosed 3 units of insulin.

It is common to be advised to dose according to every 10g of carbs. However, my brain works better thinking how many g of carbs need 1 unit of insulin. If it is 1.5 units of insulin for every 10g carbs, this is equivalent to 1 unit of insulin for every 6.6g carbs. I’d probably round up to 1 unit of insulin for every 7g carbs.

I would just add up carbs in usual way. Then halve. So if you eat 70 carbs it would be 7 units plus 3.5 units. 10.5 units. If you don’t have a half unit pen round up or down depending on how you think your body will react to your meal.

Can you be more specific? What are you ratios and which foods are hard to calculate?

@sandy90 do you have meals that you often eat? I was told most of us regularly eat the same 10 meals.
My advice would be to work out the carbs a(and insulin dose) for these meals and make a note. This makes it easy to repeat and you don't have to count from scratch each time.
If you eat something different, you can compare it with your "standard meals" and tweak where appropriate. For example, if you often eat meat potato and two veg, calculate the carbs in that and different veg or meat should make little difference to the carbs.
