Carb counts

hi to all..
I'm still taking the meds (fewer than I was), but I've mostly got my blood sugars down through weight loss and reduced carbs. I've done this through strict denial, eg carbs are bad so don't eat any, or hardly any.
My question is: (having searched for carb counts or weights on the web)
Is there a definitive carb count manual anywhere? I know people talk about grams of carbs, but what informs their advice. How many carbs are good or bad , what is the carb count of different foods etc?
More specifically how do you count your carbs

I know I'm not alone anymore!

There are many ways to count carb content. Most of the food packaging itself will display carb content. There is a good book called Carbs & Cals ( this also has pictures with different portion sizes ). There are apps for your phone, Carbs & Cals or My Fitness Pal. The latter has a barcode reader function which is very handy and also free. There are many other sources of information too, Google, DAFNE on-line to name but a few
As for a specific amount for each person, this is individual choice. Low carb diets appear to work for many on here but the trick is to find a level you can stick with. I've read on here of people going extremely low carb but not being able to stick with it as it becomes too restrictive. Good luck !

I have two books for reference both in the Collins Gem series. The first is simply called GI and gives an approximate GI rating for many common foods and ingredients though obviously portion size helps to determine the overall Glycaemic Load. This book also lists the carb values for each food based on a stated weight of the food. The second book is oddly enough just called Carbs and includes much of the same information only without the GI figures. Each book cost just under £4.

I just used my meter to arrive at a carb level that worked for me, that's around 50 grams per day, don't find low carb particularly restrictive either is just a case of making use of the many recipes on here and other sites. I must admit I'm lucky in that my OH is a brilliant cook and has adopted the same diet as me. :D
