carbs for breakfast

Just be sure to reduce your insulin if your lowering your carb intake at breakfast.
 
I am currently on 4 units of novorapid in the morning and that was for 6 Weetabix with semi-skimmed milk.

What dosage would three Weetabix with semi-skimmed milk be? What is the general ratio?
 
I take it that you do not know what your carb ratio is or how work out your insulin if you lower your carbs.

No, I don't yet. I have only been diagnosed 6 weeks and my diabetic nurse said for me to keep the same insulin dosage until at least tomorrow.

But, after today's readings (and probably everyother day I've had Weetabix) the spike has made me much more concerned about what I eat for breakfast. So not sure what to do!

Trouble is with diabetes, there are no fixed norm, as we are all different with metabolism and so many parameters playing in. Good suggestions from other posters above though about some literature to read to gain more insight into this critical area to maintain best control possible no matter what and how little/much we eat.
In general you can say that if your current bg is high, then you should take the bolus for meal around 30 mins before mealtime.
If bg in middle range, then take bolus approx. 15 mins before mealtime.
If bg in low range, then take bolus when you start eating.

But next to this, another factor to consider is what it is you are going to eat and how much of it.
Especially the glucose index (GI) of the food (a measure of how fast the food is digested and how fast its carb content finds its way into your bloodstream). Pure sugar has a GI = 100 as benchmark. As you can imagine, a food with a high GI requires an earlier intake of bolus to counter versus a meal consisting of low GI food. Despite both foods may have the same total number of grams of carbohydrates. As we checked the Weetabix, they have a proportionally high GI, so that in itself points toward taking the bolus earlier to counter the rapid sugar uptake.

Makes sense....

To be honest you need to speak to your DSN before changing your foods. They know your background insulin and your lifestyle mire than we do.

For example.... It msybe that weekends your levels may be different to weekdays and your DSN could take this in to account.

I would not be personally advising you to change your foods until you have chatted with your health care team...

Please let us know how your readings are by delaying eating for 3 hours after getting up!!

The results are in ……… no bolus and no food

Before bed - 6.0

7am - 7.1
8am - 8.7
9am - 8.8
10am - 7.9

Still a slight increase without food or bolus - take it that means I need an increase in my basal dose?!!! x
 
It proves that it is bolus timing needs to be adjusted for your breakfasts. You did have a slight rise from basal but there needs to be a little bit of flexibility in case you have a rush of adrenalin or exercise etc that could knock you downward.... If you were on a pump you could fine tune this more..

I will leave for MDI persons to advise on timings of bolus etc. it may be that you could actually take 1/2 a unit more basal but to do that the rest of your daily readings would need to be analysed more as 1/2 a unit more could affect these. You may not have 1/2 a unit pen either...

If you were pumping I would try to help you further myself but I'm no longer up todate with MDI...

Well done for doing the basal testing. Good results considering...
 
Hi Holly! Me too... I've recently worked out my morning Cheerios are high GI, so if I have them for brekkie, I need to take my Novorapid a full hour earlier(pain in the ****).. Lol... Just made a joke, hee hee.. Anyway, if I have weetabix, I tend to put my Novorapid in about 20 minutes earlier.. This has helped me a lot. My levels shot up after brekki to 18 before I realised this.
I might go for the eggs and bacon option on a weekend, sounds like a plan.

I'm not really sure - it might just be a one off!!

I gave my bolus 30mins before breakfast and then had 2 boiled eggs and a slice of multigrain bread toast (20g carbs)

The rest of the morning was normal!!! I'll see if it works again tomorrow x

Sounds a good eating plan!! Something about us diabetics... We never take one days readings and believe the same will happen the next day.. Made me chuckle when you wrote "see if it works agsin tomorrow"!!
