Hi,
I am newly diagnosed type 1, and am just trying to find out how many carbs should I be eating a day. And for breakfast , lunch, dinner. At the moment I am averaging about. 220g carbs a day- can anyone please advise
Thanks

As with many such things, I don't think there is a 'right' answer other than what works for you. You'll see from other posts that there are a lot of opinions on all sides. I was diagnosed T1 about 15 months ago and while I've made a few adjustments to my diet, I'm pretty much eating as I did before. My carb intake varies depending on what I have for dinner (tea). Typically, I'll eat about 125 - 150g across breakfast and lunch and dinner can be between anywhere between 70 - 200 g depending on food and hunger. I do still eat pudding, cake etc. but I also exercise to a reasonable level, my bmi is about 24 and I'm fortunate enough to manage good BG control through carb counting. I do know I'm quite fortunate and what I do won't work for everyone.

Hope some of that ramble is useful to you!!

Very much so! Like I said, what works for one person may well not work for another but things like carb counting are pretty much useful for everyone.

One thing that I have found though is that exercise makes a huge difference to my ability to control my BG levels. You've got to be very careful to avoid a hypo but well worth doing if you can manage it (I do about an hour of moderate to hard swimming a couple of times a week but do have to 'carb load' - deliberately under inject for my meal beforehand - and it's taken some adjusting to get it right!)

Cheers. Warden thanks for that , I suppose it's just a learning curve]

That's right Krisjan and we never ever stop learning.

As a newly diagnosed you want to monitor your control closely and report back to your diabetes team who should advise you on insulin adjustments, for now I wouldn't worry about how many carbs you are eating a day and stick to what been discussed between yourself and your team, in time you can decide for yourself how much you want to eat over the three meals once you get use to carb-counting and adjusting your insulin.

Good luck and welcome to the forum btw :)
