after getting advise on here ive started cutting down portion sizes with potato pasta and starchy foods and am now getting great results after my meals. I have a meal roughly every 5 hours with fruit snacks between every 2 and a half hours to keep levels normal and this is whats happening. Only thing is im starting to feel hungry. Has anyone got any idea of what snacks i could have. Ihave crisps every now and then but now ive started watching the carbs noticed that they are quite high if you eat alot and because im losing weight aswell the saturated fat isnt so great. How many carbs should i be looking at for my main meal?

There is not a guideline for how many carbs you should be eating. You need to do a bit of trial and error, and see which foods, and how much of that food, effects your BG level.

Nuts are a great snack - avoid Peanuts and Cashews as they have high(er) carbs than the rest (but are still infinitely better than crisps!). Nuts are extremely filling, and you'll only need a small portion to keep you going.

Cheese is also great for snacking, and again, a little will keep you going for hours.

Watch the fruits that you are eating - all fruits are not equal. Berries are especially good if you are Lo-/Med-/Restricted-Carbing (<<<See how diplomatic I was there? )

hi the fruits i eat are strawberries rasberrys or blueberries only with weetabix or shredded wheat .for snacks normally plum, apple, pear. Just stopped the banana because the levels where to up and down for me.

its weird thirst t hing in the morning levels are low between 5.7 -6.9 porridge aswell. However if i have then at night the levels shoot up in the 10s

I had the same problem with feeling hungry all the time and took to snacks (like nuts, cheese and so on). However, you can get used to the smaller portion sizes and once you do, the hunger will go away. In my case, I have just had to increase my potato portion because muy BG started to get toward the lower end of my target range so that has helped a lot.

Hi ian, Doesnt the nuts and cheese affect your cholesterel levels because of the high fat. I just want to get the perfect balance as if i get to insulin i lose my hgv license which doesnt feed my family :(

You need to do a lot of research. You'll find out that eating fat doesn't increase your cholesterol. You'll find that cutting carbs REDUCES your cholesterol, and you'll find that Type 2 doesn't necessarily have to lead to insulin treatment if you can gain control early on.

Check the new book review section on this site - I'd recommend the book/website Blood Sugar 101.

Good luck!

I beg to differ....I was on a low carb/high fat diet and my Cholesterol levels shot up from 3.2 to 5 !!
I immediately cut out the fats, and my Cholesterol level is now back down to 3.2. So it wasn't good for me.

Hi,

I'm a Type 2 and that's basically the way that I eat these days. However, even though I'm eating a low calorie slimming diet of around 1,300 to 1,500 most days, I can't really say that I ever feel hungry. In fact, it's almost the opposite, I seem to be eating often just to make certain that I don't eat too few calories.

I use fruit as my snacks almost all the time and try to space each piece out by an hour or more. My testing shows that fruit hardly affects my blood glucose levels - even grapes. My favourite fruit snacks are small oranges, apples and pears - I buy them by the bucketful carry them with me wherever I go. Eating plenty of fruit has the added benefit that means I'm getting plenty of carbohydrate in my diet to replace the starchy carbohydrate - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, rice and pasta - that I've largely cut out almost altogether.

By the way, you sound to be doing just great - well on track! I'm putting my money on you joining the 5% Club next time.

Best wishes - John
