Would carrot and sweet potato be a good alternative to mashed potato? Not a large portion of course.....

Sweet Potatoes are very carb rich, so are not a good replacement for potatoes. Pumpkins and members of the squash family are better, as are celeriac.
One of the best replacements I've used for mashed potatoes is cauliflower. I cook it up until it's soft, then mash it up with butter, cheese, and pepper.

Not something I would eat through choice as I would think it too carby, however you could try a small portion and test before a and after eating.

When I was in my hard workout carb eating phase, I did get a HbA1C of 42 with sweet potatoes as my main carb, but we are all different. If you are doing a "liberal" lchf diet a small portion of sweet potatoes is probably the best of the rest http://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb:

I have never tried sweet potatoes but I find carrots spike me
