CGM on the NHS?

Hi
I was just wondering if anyone has managed to get a CGM on the NHS and if so where do you live? I've been doing a lot of research into the CGM and really feel that my 5 year old daughter should have one. Our NHS board is Lothians (East Scotland) and I'm going to be speaking to them about this next week. I am therefore trying to gather as much information as possible about it. We had a huge fight just to get her a pump so I'm not hopeful but you never know...!
Thanks
Vikki

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
Vikki.
Not sure the pump 'mob' are around at the moment so in the meantime here is a link to the SIGN (Scotland) guidelines. For this info on CGM just type 'CGM' in the search box of the document.

http://www.sign.ac.uk/pdf/sign116.pdf

One systematic review of five poor quality RCTs on CGM versus SMBG in children with type
1 diabetes showed no additional benefit for CGM on HbA1c results.

CGM may be a useful adjuvant to conventional self monitoring in selected adults with type 1
diabetes as an aid to improve glycaemic control, however further research is required to identify
the groups of patients who will gain most benefit.

CGM should not be used routinely in people with diabetes.

Don't let that put you off, hopefully we will have some Members later with some practical experience of the subject who can offer their advice.........

hi vikki,

I'm in fife and got told that you can sometimes get one if the reps have given some to the nurses at our clinic.

Maybe a long shot but have you tried speaking to reps to see if you can windle some out of them? (stranger things have happened  )

Hi there Vikki

I have been funding my CGMS since May of last year. Unfortunately NICE won't fund the use of this on the NHS. They don't see the need!! I agree with you totally, we shouldn't have to pay for them ourselves. After the initial set up costs, it works out at about £160 per month to run continually. Well worth it but really expensive. It is a god send for me. I am a patient in Stirling and don't think that funding is available elsewhere. Hope this helps. K

At the pre-pump information session I attended, the DSNs mentioned a patient on a pump who has zero hypo awareness, she just collapses every time. They've managed to get NHS-funded CGM for her. So it's possible, but you'd need a really good case and show you'd tried everything else.
