Hi everyone
Tomorrow i have an appt with the dietican and diabetes nurse on how to manage my daughters new basal bolus regime.
What are some important questions do you think i need to ask to ensure i understand what is being told to me ?
I feel so stressed with all of this my mind is struggling to write this...
My daughter is 19 has autism is non verbal just to let you know.
Many thanks

Hello @Rox000 Can you take someone with you to write stuff down and remember what's been said ? Can you also ask about getting support additional support ? Good luck tomorrow, I'm sure if anything it will be a relief for you to talk through this with them, just make sure you write down any questions you have now so you can cover off anything that crosses your mind, it can infuriating to leave appointments with unanswered questions.

yes thankyou juicy will do. my husband will be there but he relies on me for thos stuff but hopefully he will catch a few things..i hope this regime works a little better....thankyou

In addition to relying on your hubby's memory, you should be able to record the conversation - most phones now have a recording capability. This will allow you to play it back later if, for example, your hubby has a different recollection to you.

Regarding the basal bolus regime, many people use that and should provide your daughter with more flexibility.

The kind of things which I would make sure you take a note of are
- what is her basal dose and at what time of the day will she take it?
- how do you calculate her bolus dose? it seems to be so many units of insulin per 10g carbs but sometimes this is described differently.
- is there any course available to help you with carb counting? This is usually a DAFNE course but different regions call it different things.
- what is her correction dose? In other words, if you notice her BG is too high, how much insulin should she take to bring it back to normal?
- which brings me to ... what is her target BG?
- what to do if she is unwell?

yes noted ...thankyou..
The public system here in Australia dont really allocate time to see endo specialists except at scheduled appts so the diabetic educator then speaks to them on your behalf seeing she has had most contact with you. I dont like that very much but i.dont have much control over the public medical system here ....frowning...
Apparently i was told today that her basal dose will be conservatively managed and they would be happy if she initally ran a little higher with her bs to avoid hypos as she cannot tell me its happening...she is non verbal with an intellectual disabilty. im ok with working like that...better adjusting that way than from low...
8-11mmol is her acceptable range that her specialists have said they are happy with..
thankyou for your reply much appreciated x
