Well my cholesterol has gone up to 7.2 and no print out available today.my bs tests good though she said.. Wanted me to start statins I said no she said re check six months. How do I get my cholesterol lower. Her idea. Bread pasta rice lol hmmm.

When I asked my GP how to lower cholesterol by diet she said "I don't know". She is the cardio-vascular specialist of the practice. :banghead:

Jack is right. You need the breakdown of the cholesterol before you make your decision on statins, but 7.2 is rather high.

It's a black art.

I'm on a very low calorie diet, 800 calories, so low fat, low protein, low carb.
My cholesterol is predicted to rise, as my liver starts to secrete it in reaction to the diet.

Should be interesting as I'm due a full review soon.

My Trigs dropped from 2.01 to 0.7 in 5 months on reduced carbs (65g) and increased fats (dairy, real mayo and loads more eggs), and are now 0.6.

This is what I don't understand I've lost over 3 stone my bmi has gone from 35 to 30 Dr very chuffed. I'm on low carb but I do have butter cheese and full Greek yog. And ok I admit it blue cheese sauce at side of salad about two table spoons full maybe twice a week.she said common even though I've lost lots weight I'm so disappointed and just want to lower it quick ad can be.

You really need the breakdowns because the total cholesterol is fairly meaningless without knowing this. My total went up a small amount, but only because my HDL increased.

Was it a fasting test? It needs to be for accurate results.

Yes was fasting I will get print out I did ask I will pop in and ask tomorrow.. In meantime should I avoid cheese and go low calorie.

How old are you mrs gimli if you don't mind me asking. Cholesterol rises with age and in some quarters that's advisable, apparently cholesterol protects us the older we get.

I don't think anyone can answer that. All we can do is either tell you what we do, or we could quote studies off the internet, but then there's always ones that say the opposite.
You really have to choose something you think you can stick to from the list, then stick with it for the six months, and re test.It can take the first three months just for the changes in your blood to happen, and then settle down.

mind you, I take a low dose statin because I think they are good for micro vascular health..but

This is a fairly common observation around these parts: “I eliminated wheat from my diet and have limited my consumption of junk carbohydrates like corn and sugars. I lost 38 pounds over three months and I feel great. I initially lost weight rapidly, but have more recently slowed to about 1-2 pounds per week. But my doctor checked some lab values and he flipped! He said that my HDL dropped, my triglycerides went up, and my blood sugar went up 20 points! He wants me to take a statin drug and metformin for my high blood sugar. What gives?”

Easy: You are losing weight. Let me explain.

When you lose weight, you are mobilizing energy stored as fat. That fat is mobilized as fatty acids and triglycerides into the bloodstream. 10 pounds lost, for instance, means the equivalent of 35,000 calories of fat released into the bloodstream.

These fatty acids are not alone. They interact with the other elements in the bloodstream. In particular, this flood of fatty acids:

That's an interesting claim.

–Block insulin–and thereby increase blood sugar. A non-diabetic can even become transiently diabetic during weight loss.'

I can only say I've seen better numbers on my diets, I have never seen my BG increase.
I'd have worried if they went up.
I'll let you know on the cholesterol, I'm due a full test in a weeks or so's time

I can only say I have been losing weight since February (hopefully maintaining now). I have lost 4 stones. I have been on 60 - 65g of carbs and increased fats, same protein as previously. My trigs went down from 2.01 to 0.6; HDL up from 1.6 to 1.8; LDL down from 3.8 to 3.2. Total down from 6.4 to 5.3. HbA1c down from 53 to 45. Diet only. No meds, not a lot of exercise.

Somewhere I'm going wrong wallchart re think

my cholesterol is high due to triglycerides - the other two are low - exercise & weight loss seem to be the best way to change this - now just to solve my arthritis so I can exercise more
