My gp asking me to go in for blood test as my cholesterol was a bit higher that they liked. I know they want me on statins and I don't want to...should I stop having full fat and go low cal from now even though I low carb as much as possible...no bread rice pasta pot and not so many root veg hardly any fruit cept blueberry once week with Greek yog...help.

Wait until you get your full lipid breakdown and then decide what action to take.

Thanks I'm annoyed as I've managed to get bs under control and lost 2 nd half stone so far.more to go mind.

Well that's good, just wait and see what the results are.

My cholesterol has returned to normal after LCHF .. I do have more of the good guys and less of the bad type, so wait untill you get the test breakdown befor you worry. Some doctors think all cholesterol is bad .. So make sure you get your results printed out. Then get back to us.

If you are loosing weight fast your cholesterol will go up
It can take up to 6 months once stable on lchf to stabilise
About 25% of people on lchf have cholestrol go up...
Only about 15/20% of your cholestrol comes from food the rest your liver makes

l am in that 25% and have lost 26kg since xmas so also fast weight loss. Given the stats on statins and how they are turning to such a poison chalice l wont touch them quite frankly even if l had a heart attack or stroke l still refuse them.
I have cut down my overall fat as cholestrol does help digest it and l went a bit nuts on cream and cheese. I also now have 40g flax seed and 20g chia a day with mixed berries and small amount of cream mixed into a mush... easiest way to eat it and tastes nice.

Read Dr Pearlmutter book Grain Brain

Cut and paste the link www.lecturepad.org into your google search do NOT click on it here
Then click on the part that says can loosing weight worsen...(it should download as a PDF
If still no luck l have managed to get to it on my computer and will email it to you.
Go into the site and join for free it is excellent. It has lot technical info however us normal folks can make sense of it.

Hope it all helps between pearlmutter and the 291 lots make sense

This converter is useful for the cholesterol numbers you will be needed.

You are a woman, don't worry about your cholesterol. Refuse the statins, I do.

Oh well had letter asking me to see Dr for routine apointment..they don't have one for two weeks :-o. So I'm going to have to wait.. My cholesterol was 6.9 so I'm asuming it's gone up.... Need to get it down with out statins

You need the breakdown, not the total. Ask for LDL, HDL and triglycerides.

They havent given me any readings on letter just asked me to see dr

My cholesterol was 6.9 on diagnosis. It's now 6.0 (or was in July, last test) but more importantly triglycerides were right down and HDL was up.

Your diet sounds fine as it is, they can't force you to take statins. Exercise is also good for reducing cholesterol.

Phone up and ask reception for the numbers, or get a printout - it's your data, you are entitled to it. At least then you can go forearmed to the appt.

Ask for total cholesterol. LDL, HDL and triglycerides.

Thank you I'm going to tweak diet a bit and loose the butter completely for a while I do so love butter. And maybe
Cut down on mayo but as I only have two tablespoons I thought ok

Thank you I was just wondering If I'd be allowed to get the printout

I would just wait and ask for the results when you see your gp to discuss things, there's not much you can do about things before then. However, these are the target cholesterol figures that they want all diabetics to aim for:

  • Your total cholesterol level should be below 4.0mmol/l.
  • LDL levels should be less than 2.0mmol/l.
  • HDL levels should be 1.0mmol/l or above in men and 1.2mmol/l or above in women.
  • Triglyceride levels should be 1.7mmol/l or less.

Actually I disagree. Granted you might not be able to do too much about the levels in that time but you can certainly do a bit of background reading and be ready to discuss the results with your GP from a position of better understanding, especially if there is pressure to take statins.

if it was me I'd stick withe the LCHF, I think it's better than carbs for your cholesterol
I like statins, after doing a lot of reading, even with my cholesterol under 3, I chose to take them for microvascular health
this study looked at the history of 60,000 Diabetics after av. 2.7
