Hi Guys
New to this but need some answers as not getting anywhere with doctors.
Is there a danger with low cholesterol levels ? I have been as low as 1.2 at present they are 2.1 doctor loves me but i feel like #### also have a big problem with both short and long term memory loss.

Cheers mp

I believe it is recognised in some medical circles that low, low levels can affect memory...your brain needs a certain level for it's memory...but don't know what levels these are.....

Hi All

Been on simvastatin since day one 10yrs ago, cholesterol was 6.9 then and been taking 40mg every night since. I believe simvastatin can cause memory loss as a side effect but Doc won't have that :(

I met with the same from my GP ref statin and memory loss. Got to say that I came off 40mg statins, and my cholesterol did climb up....to 5.3....(last month) my HCP and Consultant knew how much I put down to simvastatin and I agreed to try another more expensive, water based 10mg one......and they wrote to my GP to inform him what to prescribe.....

Too early days to know whether my cholesterol has dropped again.....but with my higher cholesterol levels my memory and aches and pains have improved......but that is more than likely down to the treatment that I am now having for my fibromyalgia which also can give memory and concentraion problems.

Since having the new statin the most important thing for me is that I haven't gone worse again, anmd I wasn't put back on simvastatin, and my diabetic consultant and DSN listened to me and my worries.

Hi madprof

I gave up statins after 3 years, with bad muscle pains and weakness in my legs. I'm not going on them again, my choice, though I know other people who have had no problems, so some people are okay with them.

Why not Google 'cholesterol too low', or similar? Also Google 'spacedoc' and see what you think of his website - a guy called Duane Graveline.

Mine is 5.3 (last test) and I'm happy with that, after doing lots of research. My individual readings (HDL, LDL, triglycerides etc) are fine. Make sure your GP gives you a full breakdown of your lipid profile so you can make your own mind up.

I do know of a person who had a heart attack, and is on a high dose of statin-AND he eats literally no fat......his cholesterols are as low as yours......and boy, he looks ill, he is always moaning about being ill-he is grey and so thin and gaunt.....he was NOT told to go on a NO fat diet-he was told to go on a lower fat diet-and has taken it to so much of an extreme you would not believe. He is permanently going to hospitals for investigations for stomach, head and back problems....he just will not recognise that perhaps (and only perhaps) his diet is contributing to his illness, memory, concentration, headaches, pains......I have twice tried to tell HCP's of his no fat diet, but they didn't listen, after 3 years of trying to tell him... he has now spoken to me about finding out if Radon Gas is leaking through his bungalow.......his diet is fruit, steamed veg, salad and white meat and that is it-nothing processed at all, no cheese, no milk, no bread, no potatoes-absolutely nothing with an ounce of fat in it-he never has choclate-when he wants somthing sweet-he sucks on a dried apricot.....all trying to get his cholesterol as low as possible to live as long as possible...and yet I believe he is doing himself worse damage by not having any fat......but I am not a HCP.....seeing what he is going through with very low cholesterol, and being on a no fat diet makes me want to keep my levels at 4-5. No less......but that is just my opinion on seeing somebody personally with very low cholesterol, and what I consider to be a dangerous no fat diet....

Because of arterial artery disease (7 stents and 4 bypasses so far) I have to keep my Cholesterol low (below 2). I take Ezetimibe and Crestor (Rosuvastatin) to achieve these targets. Fortunately, I suffer no adverse reactions to Crestor. For those who get adverse symptoms from Statins, I suspect Ezetimibe on its own would be avery viable alternative. Indeed preventing the absorption of fats rather than removing it afterwards, makes more sense anyway.
