Christmas is coming

I will have 2 or 3 glasses of Taittinger with lunch, but other than that no alcohol. MrCeleriac will have one glass as driving in the evening.

I have a bottle of Sweden's traditional Christmas soft drink, Nygarda Julmust, which is made (only for Christmas) from a 1910 recipe and is therefore only 9g carbs per 100g. It's like a root beer and although mildly carbonated, can also be mixed with dark Pilsners and Porters.

I may also have a couple of the tiny mixer cans of Diet Coke, I'm undecided. Mostly, it will be organic Earl Grey tea with organic soya milk or herb teas made with Evian for me - we live in a town which gets spring water and my mother lives in the country but her tap water is horrible. Not only is it often brown, we've found wiggly creatures too eww.

Menu wise (husband is cooking at my mother's) all we've decided on so far is a gluten-free veggie low carb nut roast. They have a gluten-free veggie Xmas pudding and will have mince pies to tuck into. I wouldn't eat the mince pies even if I didn't have diabetes !

The best bit will be the cold buffet supper. The only hardship is missing out on piccalilli.

I think I may be in for a slightly 'carby' Christmas as I am going out to lunch on the 11th, 16th and 17th December with various work colleagues. Then I've got Christmas Day with hubbie's family (I'm cooking so should be ok) and Boxing Day with mine. However I always have the family around on New Year's day so will be able to decide on the menu - usually a buffet with lots of cold meats and salad and a selection of sweets including sugar free jelly with fresh fruit!

I will do all the cooking for me & the wife over festive season we will see my family for lunch up the local on Xmas eve my birthday and then we'll get home 3ish & turn the our door entry off we live in housing association ground floor flat and we'll eat a lot of salad on Xmas day with nice turkey crown and eat all cold meats & salad until New Year's Day and then have a small roast dinner their will b plenty of fruit out I'll make a sugarless trifle a blackberry fool a sugarless crumble we'll decide on which fruit later my only real vice is dried apricots & the tropical fruit mix we'll have a bottle of rosé opened on Xmas day last for three days and a small brandy with some decent filter coffee we will have a packet of after eight which we'll eat frugally we'll enjoy and watch plenty of films

Can I ask what all you veterans of type 2 do over Christmas when there is so much temptation about not only food but drinks too , do you throw caution to the wind for a couple of days or do you stick to low or no carb, just curious

What would Jesus do?, as the saying goes.

He would probably eat and drink what he wanted ..up to ( but not beyond) the point of guilt.
He would definitely do some extra exercise, a brisk walk twice a day, to off set any over indulging...except when The Great Escape is on, of course.

I wish you well.

This is on my mind. Newly diagnosed (Type 2). I'm the shopper and the cook, and to complete the circle, I also set the dinner table and do the washing up. With a wife and two teenage daughters, I don't want to spoil Christmas - and it's not just Christmas Day Lunch. We have family and friends over, so I tend to plan all of the meals for 3-4 days starting with Christmas Eve breakfast right through to 'something for the journey home', the day after Boxing Day. This year, I'm seeing (breakfast) a lot of bacon, eggs cooked a variety of different ways and spinach., Lunch I will sneak in some sweet potatoes with the normal roast potatoes and buffets where people can choose what they want so it wont be too noticeable that I can hardly eat any of it. The hardest part I imagine, will be the evening cuppa.I have no idea what my substitute for dunking biscuits is going to be. This may be the first Christmas where I loose weight. (This might be a bit draconian, but I've already lost 3 stone and need to loose at least another 3 (by Christmas?) I'm not going to throw that away even if I have to leave the table to attend to something in the kitchen whilst everybody tucks in.
Sean, check out the Christmas recipe book on the website, there are some low carb cookies on there and loads of other ideas. My brother and I are both diabetic so I shall be making a few goodies especially for us! ;)

There are a lot of things you can still eat but in smaller portions when it comes to buffets their are many different salads make your own low sugar/salt dressings to taste canapés are just as easy use a lot of fresh salad, veg. fruit & fresh herbs & of course meat & fish oily fish is particularly good good luck & happy eating

Thank you - I will. I just have to be careful. I have trouble stopping when it comes to eating and booze. It's just best to have nothing.

I just know I don't want to sit there miserable wishing I could have what everyone is having, but I know with forward planning there is no need to feel deprived, my diet has changed dramatically but at last I am in control I have got some good ideas from this post, I've had a pretty stressful time lately and struggled to stay on track in so far as the right foods haven't always been available ( lots of time spent at the hospital ) taking a walk or two over the holiday period is one piece of advice I will definitely be taking

Yes I know what you mean. I am a Taurean and therefore human version of a labrador! Have no will power when it's staring at me! Still, having the low carb version is still better than succumbing to the really bad stuff I suppose.

Taurean too - Life is full on. We bark, we wag our tales and we chase balls and cars and we woof everything down and then beg for more!

Luckily my Hba1c is still at 39. So I will eat everything - just won't have a box of celebrations/roses/heroes or toffees around the house. Can't stand mince pies/Christmas cake/Christmas Pudding so no temptation there.

Vodka with diet lemonade whilst at home (diet coke when I am out - as that is usually only diet mixer available). Already had 2 of the 3 meals out planned for this year - as alcohol lowers blood sugars and they have been boozy does I have needed the carbs to balance - plus dancing the night away is my favourite exercise so that helps (in fact more in danger the following morning when my liver thinks I need a boost because I am low). Is also my birthday next week - so my kids will say yet again "do you want some cake with that cream". I am lucky that it was caught really early and is now in remission, so it's about finding the right balance for you.

If you do raise your blood sugars don't fall into the cycle of "well they're up now, might as well have another mince pie/chocolate". It's all about the balance - so have a roast potato if you want - but then don't be the couch potato - cleaning up/dancing will burn off small indulgences.

Have fun!!

**** I am Taurus to and definitely fit the Labrador analogy. All that time spent chasing footballs, squash balls, rugby balls makes sense now :)
