Christmas is coming

Can I ask what all you veterans of type 2 do over Christmas when there is so much temptation about not only food but drinks too , do you throw caution to the wind for a couple of days or do you stick to low or no carb, just curious

Christmas is just another day to me food wise, there is a lot of 'christmas fare' that I can still eat. I would rather have a day feeling great, than eat the carbs and drink and feel ****!
I want to enjoy Christmas, that is more important, my family want me to be healthy, rather, than enjoy Christmas!

Sorry, if this isn't what you maybe didn't want to hear, but, if you can limit your carbs and have a glass of wine and a glass of rum in the evening, you might be relaxed in your Christmas cheer!

Christmas is for kids and grandkids and big kids like me!:p:rolleyes:

It's only once a year and for a lot of people just one day. I will have my turkey roast, lots of turkey and vegetables but only a couple of small roast potatoes, I will even have a stuffing ball. I don't normally do puddings anyway but if there happens to be some cheesecake I will have a small slice of that too. Later I will indulge in one or two choccies and some nuts, I work hard on my BG all year round and have good control so one day won't do any damage, it didn't last year. I don't drink so don' t know the score on that..sorry​
 
Aah missed that DeejayR still finding my way round the forum or I wouldn't have asked, thank you for the link I will have a good read, personally as I don't have a sweet tooth I can do without mince pies, choccies etc....and after cooking a huge great dinner for the family I never really have a big appetite once we sit down, plus I had such a scare last week with my BS level being so high that I will try and stay low carb though a glass or two of Jack Daniels may pass my lips ;)
 
JD may have more sugar content than other spirits being a bourbon whiskey.I am not entirely sure.Likewise Southern Comfort or Morgan's spiced etc.
Many here stick to "normal" spirits like whisky,gin and vodka with low cal mixers.
Also red wine is low carb,in comparison to white wine or sparkling wine.So I presume a Christmassy mulled wine is in.
Beer is difficult tho Coors Lite works out at 7.5 g a can.
So in terms of a tipple there are some options that are more low carb than others.
I have my eye on a nice red and a cracking malt whisky,just need to drop enough hints so Santa drops them in.
 
My first diabetic Christmas also so reading your thread with interest. I have never had a sweet tooth so at least I don't have to worry about that aspect. Stuffing will be my only off-piste treat. Confining myself to just a couple of glasses of wine though could be a challenge. And I hope no one buys me my favourite Whiskey.......

This is on my mind. Newly diagnosed (Type 2). I'm the shopper and the cook, and to complete the circle, I also set the dinner table and do the washing up. With a wife and two teenage daughters, I don't want to spoil Christmas - and it's not just Christmas Day Lunch. We have family and friends over, so I tend to plan all of the meals for 3-4 days starting with Christmas Eve breakfast right through to 'something for the journey home', the day after Boxing Day. This year, I'm seeing (breakfast) a lot of bacon, eggs cooked a variety of different ways and spinach., Lunch I will sneak in some sweet potatoes with the normal roast potatoes and buffets where people can choose what they want so it wont be too noticeable that I can hardly eat any of it. The hardest part I imagine, will be the evening cuppa.I have no idea what my substitute for dunking biscuits is going to be. This may be the first Christmas where I loose weight. (This might be a bit draconian, but I've already lost 3 stone and need to loose at least another 3 (by Christmas?) I'm not going to throw that away even if I have to leave the table to attend to something in the kitchen whilst everybody tucks in.

I thought red wine and whisky were pretty much the only alcoholic drinks we could enjoy?!
 
I'm looking forward to a proper Irish coffee this year! Usually I would be - oh no, full fat cream but this year, bring it on!

Whiskey, is grain alcohol!

As far as I am aware, only rum maybe Bacardi and some obscure spirits are low carb. But one dream of single malt, should be ok once a year, as long as you have allowed for it of course!

I have heard this too for whisky ( I collect single malts and have a few bottles that I drink based on price. The rest are there to pay off university debts for my kids), but wine - isn't that fruit juice?

Wine is only 3 or 4 carbs a glass as far as I am aware. Problem is your body will burn that before fat. Drink too much and it will definitely slow your weight loss. It has also positive side effects (along with most alcohol) of reducing your blood sugar. Its actually beneficial in moderation. Problem is moderation is not my middle name :)

Actually whiskey is very low carb....not low calorie though. Just checked with Google 0.1 per 100 grams. What it is distilled from doesn't really matter. Although Bacardi will likely be slight higher I guess because it is distilled from sugar cane (or molasses in 90% of cases).
 
It's going to be my 1st xmas as a type 2 but thankfully I do enjoy my veggies so will pile up the veg and turkey and just have a few roast potatoes. Of course, selection boxes and tins of chocolate will be out but I really like the taste of 70% or 85% cocoa chocolate so will have a few squares of that as my chocolate fix.

Drink wise, I'm gradually switching over to red wine as it's "better" than white, unless of course you consume it by the bottle! ;):rolleyes:

Oh, and I'll probably get some nice cheeses and cashew nut, both of which I loved before my diagnosis.

Xmas breakfast is usually a bagel with scrambled eggs and salmon which hubby has cooked for us for a few years now. I can still have that but may need to buy a wholemeal bagel or just skip the bagel altogether and maybe have some nice mushrooms to go with it.

Hubby (as a non diabetic) will be munching on whatever he likes . . pringles, savouries etc and drinking what he likes. I'm gonna ask him to eat his stash of goodies out of sight in the shed!!!! :p
 
I normally write out my menus before the big day and use them as a shopping list, as I am a new blood tester, I am keeping a food diary and watching carefully what makes the sugar levels rise, at the moment it seems like all obvious carbs, I've tried wholemeal foods and it makes no difference sugars still rise....my levels have dropped over the last two weeks, they were very high, so by the time I do my menus I'm hoping I'll have a good idea what to avoid, this Type 2 is having a massive impact on my life but I will control it !!!! as for the hard stuff I am a Jack Daniels girl so going to have to try a glass and see what happens, I'm also very fond of Mulled Wine so going to have to experiment :-)

I was the same with 'wholemeal foods'....wholemeal bread spiked me just as high as normal bread. I imagine the mulled wine would be fine depending on the recipe....I have seen people add loads of sugar.
