Hey all,

Ive been T1 since the age of 7 (21 years) and since leaving school 12 years ago, my control has steadily been getting worse. Up until 3 years ago a Hba1C of 13% was considered good for me, I never tested, and was missing a lot of insulin doses (Humalog / Lantus).

In September of 2009 I was rushed to hospital with a suspected appendicitus, and after having it removed, and finding there was no problem, I have spent the last 3 years with chronic pain syndrome, and no other explanation for the pain. Ive had various tests performed with no conclusive results, and being ill this long has had other affects on my mind and body. Peripheral neuropathy in my lower legs and hands, as well as insomnia / hypersomnia, fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, and depression.

Ive had my GP, hospital gastro consultants and my Diabetic consultants all run tests of various types, with no diagnosis, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

On the plus side of being ill, I am now testing regularly, and not missing any insulin doses. My Hba1C is also down to around 8%. So its not all doom and gloom.

Wow, you've really had a bad run :(

I can't say I've had any personal experience with such issues, but I read a lot of testimonials from people at Mark Sisson's site (http://www.marksdailyapple.com/category ... z2B1bd7NdP), Robb Wolf's site (http://robbwolf.com/category/real-life- ... timonials/) and various other Primal/Paleo sites about the great benefits of the Primal/Paleo diet for helping a huge range of health problems.

My advice would be to cut all the processed junk out of your diet and start eating real food. Most of us today are woefully over-fed yet woefully under-nourished.

There is also an autoimmune protocol for very stubborn health issues.

Personally, I can't believe the difference that cutting out wheat and other grains has made to my health - I feel like a completely different person. Gluten sensitivity is extremely common and there is a very strong correlation between it and diabetes type 1. This link (and reading the many comments after it giving people's personal experience) is one of many that convinced me to stop eating grains:

Best wishes,

Cheers Indy, will look into the diet. I generally eat healthy anyway, and dont eat junk food. Ive tried cutting a lot of different food groups out, except wheat and grains. I've also thought of the Gluten, but Ive had a test to see if I had Coeliac Disease, and that was all clear. Will do a bit of reading, and speak with my dietitian.

Thanks again,

James

Cheers, James!

I also read/heard something recently about the role of the appendix in gut health - apparently it is what's responsible for rebuilding our gut flora after infections, antibiotics, etc. So researching gut health/probiotics might be worthwhile too.

You can also be gluten sensitive without having outright coeliac disease. One of the proteins in wheat (I think it's gliadin) is implicated in gut permeability/leaky gut syndrome.

Chris Kresser's site also has a heap of stuff on these kinds of issues:

Happy researching

Lots and lots of research! Being in this much pain, theres not much to do, so this will be a healthy distraction.

Cheers again :D

Just wondered if they've ruled out the possiblity of Fibromyalgia in your case? To help nerve damage pain I take Alpha Lipoeic Acid tablets minimum dose of 600mg daily after reading it helped nerve's repair in some people. Even although some experts argue about whether its effective for nerve pain, it's still an effective anti-oxidant .
