I have developed an anxiety disorder which is bad in a morning but gets a bit better during the day.this has got worse over the last month,
I am going to see my Dr on Thursday,I expect to be put on some medication,so I have been looking at what may help..
I have noticed on the forum that some people take Citalopram, and I would welcome advice.on the effect of diabetes.
Im T2 on 1x500mg Metformin a day.
From what I have read it you have to be carefull if you are diabetic.

Hi Patricia, I took Citalopram for a long time until it stopped working, I now take a low dose of Venlalic which is good too, most antidepressants take time to build up in your system and have the usual side effect of running you to the loo but once they kick in you feel much better quite quickly. Your doctor will know which one to give you that will balance with Metformin so don't worry. The important thing is for you to feel better. Thursday is not far away now will be thinking of you

Hi Patricia21,

I think antidepressants are like any other medication. What works for some may not work for others ! Also I have a fairly good tolerance to most medications and have never really had any major isses with any

I have took citalopram for about two or three years and I found it a very subtle drug. After about a month of taking it although my anxiety was still there I realised I was coping much better in general.

Side effects for me was constant yawning (not feeling tired) just constant yawning. Not too good for the sexual functions though !

May be different for women !

I was on sertraline for a while (about a year but didn't really notice much of a change. I came off it too quickly and was dizzy for a month !)

Being totally honest though Patricia I would say the most beneficial treatment I have ever had for my GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) has been CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) as it gave me an understanding into how my thinking impacts on my anxiety and I was given practical strategies to use that I still use today and that still help !

I am type 1 so can't give any advice based on personal experience of type 2 but for me it didn't create any concerns regarding my diabetes.

CBT for me !

Love to know how it goes on Thursday Patricia21.

Citalopram is good but it will take a couple of weeks to kick in, it has to build up in your system first then you will start to feel better. Don't know how diazepam works, I've never taken that but the really good thing is talking therapy, it's brilliant, I had it after my husband passed away and if the therapist is good she will be a great help. You have had your share of difficulties and a lot to cope with and I really hope therapy comes through quickly.

I was thinking about you earlier Patricia and I think you have every right to feel anxious with all the problems you have had with appointments and waiting for treatment. That feeling of life being out of control and having to wait endlessly for things to happen is bound to make you feel unsettled Imo. I hope the tablets help when they start to kick in.

Maybe you could re-retire? Find a function to fill and feel useful?

When I was depressed earilier in my life I found SSRI very useful. For the moment I'm terribly unhappy as my husband is very ill in heptacellular cancer but it doesn't make me neither depressed nor anxious so I don't take any meds.

Hi Pat, the Talking Therapy sounds good. Even by just talking, something may spring to mind or it may lay dormant and with a trained therapist, it could be so beneficial to your outlook. Good luck and I hope you start to feel a little better as the weeks go by.
