Is there an alternative to something like Coffee Mate?

I note the main ingredient on the tub is glucose syrup...

I love an occasional coffee with the stuff but am sure it will be a no no if diagnosis is correct.. :?

I drink my coffee black but would not have touched this kind of product pre diagnosis and wouldn't give it to anyone else. These substitutes are usually a chemical combination. We did have a discussion about a similar product, ElmLea Longlife Cream, it turned out that this was unhealthy too.
My advice would be that as you only have this occasionally then buy the smallest pot of real cream and use that. You wont have too much waste then and you will know what you are drinkking.

Real cream is low in carbs many people think CREAM NO NO but a little in your coffee is yummy and unless you are on a strict low fat diet I dont think it will do you much harm unless you drink loads of coffee but that is another story

I used to drink loads of black coffee but decided last weekend to stop drinking anything containing caffine. I must admit it was very easy to come of it. No sweats, no temper tantrums, in fact....no anything.

I wonder if it would be as easy to give up alcohol???

I drink coffee with cream and had no adverse affects, try it yourself and test BG, it could be the same for you :)

I too drink Coffee with fresh single cream, probably 5 mugs a day. Has no effect on my BG levels whatsoever. Just me. :D

I have just done a buying in today and as the double cream was on special went for that BUT 1st I compared it to the single cream in values...and the carb / sugar wotsit was better on the double?

Coffeee and DOUBLE cream......I would have that on top of an Irish Coffee, but it has to be single for everyday drinking. It's only about 2g per 100 mil anyway, minimal amount overall.

An average mug of black coffee with single cream is approx 2.76g carbs.

I also avoid the double Cream as it has a much higher fat content, something I need to avoid.

I think it was on Blackadder that Baldrick had a substitute for cream but I dare not tell you what it was!!!

I think I would really struggle to give up coffee. I drink about 5 cups a day. I like my coffee neat, so no milk and sugar for me!

And I would normally agree with you Ken but that is why I chose the double over the single as per 100mls the double was lower in carb and in sugars...I will double check tho on my next visit to tesco...

I totally agree. It is a choice really between a fraction more carbs in a mug or more Fats. Depends on how low carb you are and if you can tolerate the fats. Me, it's the carb choice AND the Fats. So it's a compromise:

Single Cream..........10.5g fat..........4.4g Carbs per 100 mil.
Double Cream.........46.7g fat......... 2.7g Carbs per 100 mil.

(Sourec: Calorie Carb and Fat Bible 2010. Average figures)

BTW.......forget the sugars, they are included in the carb content.

Nigel.

Drinking a cup of coffee a day could be the secret to long life, researchers claim.

As I drink at least 5 mugs of Coffee a day, does that mean I could live 5 times longer ???
Now that would get right up some peoples noses.........

thank you for going to this trouble Ken, I have the small Gem carb whoojit and it says 2tbsp double = 0.5 carb (more likely to have that amount) and single = 0.7 for 2 tbsp...

I agree with you tho, fat content and carbs I need to focus on...
