Coming off Trulicity

Hi All,

9 months ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and my HBA1C was 71, I was quickly put on Trulicity initially 0.75 then up to 1.5, metformin 4000mg and now my HBa1C is down to 38 and my weight has dropped by 13kgs. My Doc has taken me off Trulicity now but kept me on metformin and a repeat test in 3 months time.

Trulicity side effects were awful in the beginning, it suppressed my appetite, I went on a low carb diet, regular exercise and lost weight. I am now worried about my weight and sugar levels creeping back up if I kept the same lifestyle, but just removed the Trulicity. Do any of you have any experience of this or thoughts?

Im afraid I dont have any advice on Trulicity but as my GP wants me to try it, Im curious about your side effects and the process. Im running out of medication options and am now on Stitgliptin (Januvia). I tried the low carb etc for a while and lost a fair bit of weight but have much more to loose so am now on week 2 of the Prof. Roy Taylors Newcastle diet - meal replacments and so far its working very well, I know some people try a combination of 1 or 2 replacements with a reduced calorie meal each day and have kept their weight steady.

Well done on coming off Trulicity and taking control of your diabetes, its not an easy thing to do for everyone - I know its not easy for me anyway and good luck x

Thank you so much, it definitely wasn't easy.

Initially I was very skeptical about starting on a strong medication (in my opinion). I was very keen on trying it all just by lifestyle changes. However my GP convinced me to take metformin as a protective drug and trulicity to be more aggressive given my age she said it is important to protect the beta function and may help with my weight loss too. I also had issues with my eye (which is how my diabetes was diagnosed) so it was important to bring down my BGs quickly.

In terms of side effects and process, I started on 0.75 for 3 months I think and then went up to 1.5. Initially it caused a lot of fatigue, stomach issues, nausea and mainly loss of appetite. I love cooking and food and somehow after trulicity I felt a bit repulsive towards food and that made me feel down. It may have well have been multiple other factors including being diagnosed newly.

I haven't come across that diet and haven't tried meal replacements. But I tried intermittent fasting loosely and my low carb is my own version i.e. I swap pasta for courgette and things like that.

I also have quite a bit of weight to lose and a steep uphill. Good luck with your journey. All I would say about medication is- discuss with your GP extensively until you are sure that you want to go in that direction.

Hi, I’ve just started trulicity was put on 1.5 straight away, did my first injection on Sunday and I’m not having any side effects other than complete loss of appetite and feeling full quicker than normal, which I can deal with. I was wondering when did the side effects kick in for you? Trying to work out if I’m in the clear.

Do you have BG monitor? The only thing I can suggest keep an eye on the numbers, my fasting levels have been a little higher after stopping gliclazide last week so having similar worries to you.

Hi.. I almost had the side effects straight away. Glad to hear that your side effects aren't too bad. I had them almost every week (worse the first 2 days after injecting).

I don't have a monitor. I didn't ask the GP this time, but when I had asked previously she had said daily monitoring wasn't needed. But may be it makes sense now.

TRULICITY has been a nightmare for me. Side effects made me feel extremely ill. After 10 weeks I have taken myself off it. Lowered blood sugar but didn’t loose much weight.

My HbA1c on diagnosis was even higher than nsj’s, but oddly my GP did not even mention medication as an option. The totality of what he advised in a one-minute phone call was “lose weight - for each kilogram lost your HbA1c will fall by about 2 points”. And that was it. So I said “Righto” and there was no further interaction with the surgery. I computed that to get down to 42 on his formula I’d have to lose 15kg, so I lost that and then (4 months on) was tested again. I was incredulous when the result came back as - 42! Must have been coincidence unless the NHS has acquired crystal balls. Anyway nsj you are doing great, keep going.

Trulicity is not for everyone.(I stopped taking it after 10 weeks as it was doing nothing and not lowering blood sugars)
I have been on every pen injection known to man including the famed ozempic..i had to come off ozempic after 6 weeks and losing 25lbs because i have diabetic retinopathy and my eye specialist hit the roof when he saw my eye results after 6 weeks of ozempic.I was then put on lantus which after being on a low carb diet as usual my weight has started to go up and not down...
