COMPARISON

Hi All,

I am new to the board. I have only recently been diagnosed and they are still unsure as to whether I am type 1 or 2.

I was given the "Optium Xceed" by the Diabetic Nurse, but decided to purchase the "Accu-Chek Compact" yesterday.

I took a reading this evening and the "Optium Xceed" gave me a reading of 7.1, where as my "Accu-Chek Compact" gave me a reading of 5.2.

Which one would you rely on or which machine do you think is more reliable?

I would really appreciate your opinion.

Thanking you in advance.

Kind regards,

The biggest difference between the two meters is that the accu-chek is reporting a whole blood glucose figure, whilst the optium xceed reports a plasma blood glucose figure (the meter multiples the value returned by the test stick by 1.12). So the Xceed will report a higher figure, by around 12%, additionally, there is also an "acceptable" tolerance of around 10% between readings.

So, multiply the accu-chek by 1.12 which will then give you a plasma blood glucose value of 5.8 mmol/L. Which, is still more than 10% different than the reading provided by the Xceed.

Thankfully, blood flows continuously around the body, so unless you can test the exact same drop of blood more than once under the exact same conditions you are unlikely to get the exact same reading between meters.

Personal preference? I have to say I prefer the Xceed (I have a Bayer and an Accu-chek as back-up meters), primarily because it does give an approximate plasma blood glucose reading rather than a whole blood reading - because it saves me having to multiply by 1.12.

Regards, Tubs.

I use two meters - Ultra 2 & Contour

I got new batteries & test solution for the Ultra

I checked both meters with the solution.

Ultra - 7.4 - correctly within the range 5.9-7.9
Contour - 4.2 - way below the range 5.8-8.1

I then did a blood test (It was shortly after a meal so the results are a spike)
Ultra - 8.8
Contra - 8.9

Why should the two meters give such different test results? Surely the glucose solution should be the same for both. Or are the control solutions meter specific?

Re: COMPARISON - accu-chek

Tubolard - or anyone else with the answer,
I have an accu-chek! does this mean that I should always multiply the result by 1.12 to get my correct glucose level as I have just been presuming that the result it shows was what the actual figure was?
your answer would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
ang.
