I was told I was diabetic about two weeks ago, a Hb1AC test came back at 9.6. I have just done a test after a meal of spag bol
with wholemeal spag and it has come back with a reading of 7. question, am I really diabetic?
I have been following a low carb diet and walking every day. Your comments would be appreciated.

Your blood test strip reading will be influenced by how long after you ate you took the sample and how much you had on your plate .. also how the bol sauce was made up and the fat content of the whole meal.

I am interested in what effect the fat content would have

Fat slows down the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose, thus preventing as high a spike as you'd have without the fat.

Yes, you are diabetic. It does not go away, you have been doing all the right things and your BGs are coming down.

As you get the BGs down the old pancreas heaves a sigh of relief and has a bit of a rest, then when you eat something a bit carby the pancreas, feeling a bit recharged so to speak, kicks in with a bit more insulin to cope.

With care you may be able to keep your BGs down and manage for many years without needing any or an increase in medication.

I have managed 10 years so far. But I know that eventually I will need a bit more help. That's the way it is.

PS Fat slows down the absorption of carbohydrates. If you have to eat chips therefore, eat very fatty ones, they are better for you.

An HbA1c of 9.6 reflects an average of a blood level of 14.7.
Roughly 50% of this reflects your levels over the last 30 days, with the balance being over the previous 2 to 4 months.
So at times you will have been over 14.7, and as has been pointed out to you, you're clearly diabetic.

Geoff
ps but you're clearly doing something right :D
