Hi Everyone- ive had a bit of a rollercoaster week and hoped someone would be able to shed some light on things.
On Wednesday evening my gp called to say some blood results ( taken at the hospital in December to investigate a range of long term symptoms they decided were ME) had come back indicating that i was heading towards being prediabetic and would it be ok to start attending diabetic clinic for further advice in diet etc. it came out if the blue but i said yes that was fine and thought nothing more of it. On Friday evening at 5pm the hospital phoned to say could i go into see a diabetic consultant first thing Monday morning- thinking it was
Just going to be a confirmation of an eat better and exercise more message i duely went. When i got into my appointment i was told that actually my bp was 141/101 my cholesterol was at 8 and another figure was at 49 which was in the diabetic range. The consultant asked if id had any diabetic symptoms- i wasn't really sure what they were to be honest so when je asked about thirst and urination increase i said no but that i did have a dry tongue and weight gain . He sent me off with a 24 hr urine test and tablets and a blood test which i later discovered were to test cortisol for some reason? I was then sent for further blood tests to measure the previous readings against and sent home. I was told i would be sent another appointment soon.
Can anyone shed any light on what i may or maynot have - he said he wouldn't tell me until confirmed or not ,with these tests to stop me being anxious but i feel more anxious having all these seriously raised results but not knowing what might be wrong? Ive googled loads but cant seem to het to the bottom of whether i might have t1 or t2 or something else. Can i have t1 and be a couple of stones over weight? Ive recently had night sweats, often wake up feeling naseous, have infertility issues, constantly eating , exhaustion and dry
Mouth as well as blurred vision especially when exercising- none of which i told the consultant because he didn't mention them and I didn't know they were linked until i came home and googled diabetes. As you can probably tell im in a bit of a state!

Hi @catherinehitch :)

First of all, don't panic :) If it was anything urgent, then you wouldn't have been sent home :)

No one here can diagnose diabetes, or obviously any other medical conditions, but I understand why you're worried. Anything 'out of the ordinary' can be worrying.

When do you get your test results back? If you're really anxious, could you phone your GP and ask for more information -ie what you're being tested for? You could explain that not knowing is making you more stressed than being told you're being tested for something specific.

Not easy but just try and relax and let the medics get on with giving you a proper daignosis, being stressed out will only make the symptoms you have worse. If you are diabetic it really is something that can be managed, while you are waiting on diagnosis why not cut right down on foods containing carbohydrate and sugars, increase the ammount of oily fish and good oils in your diet and eat more leafy greens and salads.

Hi Catherine,
Your story sounds quite familiar. A couple of weeks back I was put on tablets for high blood pressure. I was told at the same consultation that my cholesterol was very high and that my Hba1c test came back at 50. They retested me a week later and it had gone up to 51 so I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes yesterday. It came as a bit of a shock because although I know I am overweight, I'm 33 years old (well, 34 today!), so this diagnosis was quite scary at first. A lovely nurse talked me through everything though and she will see me for a second appointment just to ensure I understand everything. I'm sure you feel quite worried at the moment and if you are diagnosed then it will seem even worse, but I've done some research online and listened to my nurse and there is a lot of help and support out there for us when we need it. It doesn't have to be catastrophic and I am going to use this diagnosis to completely change both myself and my lifestyle, to turn what feels like a big negative into a big positive. I hope you are not diagnosed with diabetes but if so, please don't despair.
