Or Doctor confused...
i had a missed call from my doctor at 5.00pm today, phoned straight back and spoke to the receptionist, who said my last blood test was back (for colestorol). but she said they miss labeled it but my result where 'normal'. Normal how i asked???. Oh erh you need to re do them.
Now that askes many questions, how normal is normal? how do they mislabel my blood? am i diabetic? The last one unfortunatly will probably be yes, but we live in hope don't we.
All i know for sure is my mmol was between 20-25 pre christmas/ post christmas, and i have since diagnosis on the 30/12 hit the healthy living hard, i am now happy with my BG levels, but work still to do, my mmol has not gone above 6.9 for around 5days.
Yesterday i had a not so healthy day, Macdonald big brekkie, 1/2 bottle of tropicana, sunday roast 1pt beer, 1/2 a yorkshire pud, followed by diabetic ice cream and a small full sugar wafer.my AM mmol was 6.8, tested before the roast at 2.30pm and was 5.8, two hours later tested again and was 5.9, which confuses me, why the 0.1 increase? i would have expected to be pushing double figures, had cereal mid evening, tested at 11.15pm and 6.7mmol, this morning 6.9, 5.30pm today 5.2.
Have i managed to get fairly stable, and heading in the right direction? can i expect problems in the future?
i did have the shakes again this weekend, not as bad as before or lasted as long. so that seems ok to me now.
i do feel in control, but like bull riding, i feel i could get thrown at any time, that is my fear, i believe i have had it easy, possibly too easy? and i am just waiting for that curve ball to knock me off my feet!

You are doing good so don't worry. Have you had cholesterol tested before? If so, what was the breakdown?

Are you on any meds?

Hi poohtiggy. Oh! = mine comes under the figure you quoted. . But, yes I do agree with you.:)

Yep, now on three metformin 500mg, and my last blood test was supposed to be for cholestoral. Will be seeing DSN this thursday.

Hi. NICE says to aim for a cholesterol level of 5 for non-dbs and 4 for dbs. It's all guesswork and based on suspect research data. The important thing is the LDL, HDL and Trig results but many GPs don't understand this. Ask the GP for this breakdown and Google this site or the web for good ratios. As another poster says, you need cholesterol for body repair and if it goes too low your heart attack risk actually goes up.

Right, saw the nurse, blood taken last time spent to much time in the van, and the minerals had disapeared, new blood taken, nurse happy with my progress and has cut metforfmin back to 2 x 500mga day,she was concerned by my 3.7mmol one evening when i had driven home from work (40miles). She said monitor levels and if i see an increase use two in evening instead.

Not really, had some shakes, but that was more likley cutting out of sugar, very sweet tooth. But like i have said before, compared to others i have had it easy, went from high sugar intake go zero in three days, that was probably too quick but my mindset did change overnight! I am happy at the moment and very aware now of my life choices and the effect the rubbish i was throwing down my throat was having. The nurse said as i have my BG well monitored and under control she does not need to see me for another month, which i took as a good sign, only being diagnosed three weeks prior.

These are the figures printed by York NHS Hospital, Diabetes Centre for:
Fasting Triglycerides - less than 1.7
Cholesterol target is - 4 or under for Diabetics.
HDL (good cholesterol) - 1.0 or higher.
LDL (bad cholesterol) - 3.0 or 2.0 for some people.
