I have type 2, take Metformin, and want to lose weight. I thought I should aim for about 100G per day - BUT have read lots of conflicting advice ranging from 50g to 150g. Now I don't know where to begin, can anyone help? Thank you.

Begin where you want to begin, see if it works for you, then adjust upwards and downwards and see if that is better or worse.

There really are no rules for this, and please don't get hung up on detailed counting and measuring and phaff. Life is too short for that :) unless you actually want to, of course. Some people seem to enjoy it.

Me? I avoid the usual, bread, rice, potato, pasta, sugar and tropical fruit. I eat normal portions of protein, plenty of non starchy veg, a few berries, and add cheese, butter, cream, coconut oil, as appropriate. Job done.

Out of interest, I counted carbs accurately for about 3 weeks once. Very tiresome. My heart went out to every carb counting insulin dependent. Turned out I eat under 50g carbs a day. Usually a lot less. But i do it because I feel well on that. Not because of the numbers.

Hope that helps.

Hi MrsDee

Welcome the forum. You'll find the members here to be very friendly and with lots of knowledge and experience, some more than others, of course. I don't profess to be particularly knowledgable but I do pick up lots when reading the posts or links in the posts.

I have cut down on carbs, ie bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, cakes/biscuits, anything with flour in it etc although, I'm not rigid about it. As well as managing to get my blood glucose and a1c down, I've also lost 14% of my body weight, which I'm thrilled about. I haven't a clue as to how many gms carb I eat in a day - I haven't got around to calculating. I've gradually got into my current way of eating, rather than restricting myself so I have now got to a point I'm eating far less carbs than I would have dreamed of. I watch BG and weight to let me know if I'm doing something right/wrong ;)

So, yes, I agree with Brunneria. Eat what you feel comfortable with. If your weight or BGs aren't dropping, then maybe you could look to see what else you might reduce re carbs on your plate.

There are a lot of articles on the internet which Members often suggest is a good read and there are some particularly good docs who explain why different things work or not.

Hope you find what you are happy with, with the weight dropping and BGs good and stable :)

Julie

Its amazing how many carbs per day the average person can consume and if you are happy starting out with 100gr per day then go for it, you wont know what your personal carb limit is until you start to experiment a little.
