Confused over carbs and sugar

Cheat Sheet for beginners
(1) Don't panic & don't blame yourself.
(2) Always read the info the label.
(4) Carbohydrates are just a name for slower acting sugars.
(5) Don't count the carbs just cut them out as far as is sensible.
(6) Avoid all root vegetables, except in very small amounts..
(7) Vegetables grown above ground are always OK, but remember tomatoes contain some sugars.
(8) Anything made from a grains or cereals including bread, pasta ,Rice and coucous are very high in carbs.
(9) All kinds of meat and fish and eggs are OK, but be careful of carbs in coatings on prepared products.
(10) Fatty dairy products including cheese cream and full fat milk are fine.
(11) Any fruit that only grows in hot climate is a no-go. Berries are OK in moderation but Grapes are a must avoid. One small apple is OK for most type 2 but in.moderation. Pears are lower sugar than apples.
My Carbs n Cal book lists apples and pears as equal carbs @ 10g each, the pear has 2 more calories at 42 (apple 40) but the pear also has 1g more fibre tinned are also 10g carbs but only 38 calories.
Although they are almost equal I can eat a daily apple but pears really spike me. It shows how important it is to test.... what one person can eat another person is unable to tolerate

Hi can you help.for the past week I've felt a very fuzzy feeling in my head .mostly of a morning .makes me feel dizzy and as if my brain is shaking in my head. Is this to do with my diabetes or maybe my metformin .your help would be greatly appreciated .

Did this start after you were diagnosed and started on metformin? Have you changed your diet and how significantly?

Have you got a meter, and if so, what was your reading when you felt like this?

Yes this has started since being diagnosed and increasing my metformin but I have drastically changed my diet ,no sugar,no carbs or very few .i have no means of recording my sugar levels yet.

What the doctor means is he isn't willing to pay for one out of his budget. According to NICE guidelines only people on insulin need a meter, but how are we to find out what effects our levels if we don't test? Your Ac1 gives an "average" reading but who's to say that a good overall figure isn't caused by big swings between highs and lows. when you start you feel a bit like a pin cushion, but as you learn what works for you this reduces

Sounds to me like it could be a symptom of 'carb flu', a reaction by the body to your new dietary regime, in which case it will pass as your system gets used to it. If it doesn't see your GP about it, But you really should get a meter as suggested - ignore what the doctor says or doesn't say about it, it's your body and you need to know what's going on day by day (and meal by meal if necessary).

Hi I noticed you are also taking metformin. I am having 3 x metformin 500mg daily . I'm not sure if I should be taking them at each meal time or taking all 3 tablets together at morning .can you help.x

My doctor said originally to take all 3 together. But I just got my new prescription and that says take 1 tablet with breakfast,1 with lunch and 1 with dinner. So I'm confused .

My prescription was 1 with breakfast and 1 with dinner, so spreading it out seems like the way to go.

It's one 3 times a day, with each meal. My other tablets I take in the morning

I was told to have one three times a day but my diabetes nurse said a lot of people forget to take the lunchtime one (that was absolutely me!) and suggested two at breakfast and one with dinner. This works a lot better for me, although I do feel stupid for being one of those people!
