Confused over my HBA1C of 41

I was diagnosed type 2 a year ago, after being mismanaged and being undiagnosed "for at least a decade" due to the amount of peripheral neuropathy and retinopathy I have. I take 1000mg Metformin daily (or supposed to).

The thing is, I eat sugary foods, high carbs. often forget to take my metformin - I went to France on holiday and hardly took any, whilst enjoying all the things I shouldn't - so I was expecting a really bad HBA1C, but it came back as 41. I feel like I came top in a test that I cheated.

So could it not be diabetes, but something else that I have, or had in the past that caused these issues? Can diabetes just go away? Whilst the numbers are very good, I am worried that once again I have been misdiagnosed but the doctor doesn't want to entertain the idea.

How were you diagnosed? It certainly sounds like you don't have diabetes or for some reason it has gone into remission. If I were you I would improve the diet anyway (sugar is not good for anyone) to avoid T2 in the future and possible weight gain, but sounds like you are one of the lucky ones!

I was diagnosed when I went to the opticians, who saw the retinopathy and immediately referred me to clinic. The doctors at my surgery got a lot of things wrong, and at first did not convert my HBA1C from the old % to the new mmol/mmo method, and thought I was fine. Only after several more visits did they finally do a Glucose Tolerance test which did indeed confirm I had Type 2.

But as the other poster pointed out, it might be a red cell problem or something. I could use a list of possibilities of what else it could be, as the doctor seems fairly settled on the idea that it is diabetes. What else could cause peripheral neuropathy and retinopathy??!
