Confused over types of diets

Hi everyone.
I’ve just been diagnosed as having Type 2 and haven’t yet had an initial appointment with the diabetic nurse.
I’d like to lose 2.5 stones and have purchased a few books with diabetic recipes as a starting point.
The confusion I have is that - should I be following a low calorie diet or a low carb diet in order to lose weight and control my blood glucose levels ?
Thanks for any advice

If you are a type two diabetic you need to control your blood glucose.
Type twos cannot deal with carbohydrate by the usual methods so that is what you need to sort out - a meter is very useful as people react differently to different foods - and you can get changes throughout the day - I eat about 10 gm of carbs first thing and then about 25 in the evening, because that keeps my readings steady.
Low carb and high fat eating usually results in weightloss, as weight gain is often a symptom of type two diabetes, but you can see what happens and adjust as necessary once you are back to normal on the diabetes readings.
Watch out for recipes for diabetics which contain significant amounts of carbs - either 'because they are good for you' or the dish is intended for type ones.

If you are T2 be very wary of diabetic recipe books. We are all different and tolerate different levels of carbs.

Your glucose meter will be your new best friend. Use it to test the food you are eating to see how it impacts you.

There are lots of recipes online, anything you fancy, Google it, just put keto first.

Thank you for clarifying that Resurgam & xfieldok
One book suggests eating starchy carbs in moderation is ok, but to watch calories & reduce fat - the others suggest very low carbs & that slightly higher fat intake is better. It leaves the newly diagnosed quite confused, facing conflicting advice !!

Hi LaL this is basically the advice from weight watchers and Slimmer world and if it worked they would put themselves out of business. :banghead:

There realy is only 2 things you need to do stop eating sugar and eat fresh food.

You body turns everything you eat into sugar. the easiest way for your body to do this is by filling up on carbs. Your body loves turning carbs into sugar and then into body fat. It's not so easy to do this to proteins like fish, meat, chicken etc... The last step is to make up for the drop in energy with healthy fats.

So Less Carbs (more protein )and Healthy Fats LCHF it can be confusing at first, try looking here for some help in recognising the foods that will help you.

By changing to LCHF you should find that you stay fuller for longer, which means you don't eat so much and shouldn't have to count calories.

You don't have to starve yourself to loose weight. ;)

Thank you all, can I just ask is it total carbs I should be counting or net carbs (ie carbs - fibre value) ??
Also my blood glucose readings are quite high first thing in the morning - around 9 !! This is despite fasting from around 7pm the following evening . Should I still eat breakfast (at normal time of 8am) or should I eat later in the morning?? This would be tricky as at work ??

If you're in the UK (which given you mentioned stones as weight I'm guessing you are) then the fibre has already been taken away, so just look at the total carbs (if in the US then you do need to subtract the fibre from the total)

Why not eat a low carb breakfast that won't send your bg up by much? Bacon and eggs is quite popular on the forum, as is full fat natural Greek yoghurt, if you like with a couple of berries or nuts.
