Hi
My bs readings are really good this pass week, with readings between 3.0 an 8.0.
Today we were out so decided to endulge by eating chips an chocolate potato etc
I bolus for all of it I'm actually supposed to do 1 unit for 6 carbs but I'm doing 1-10 ,as I had a hypo today that dropped to a 3.0 from 7 and it was really quick so thought my ratio maybe wrong.
So I bolus for dinner and chocolate but didn't bolus for the extra chocolate an my bs was 6.7 so I thought this can't be right so I did it again 5.7 am again 6.6
I should have been in the late 20s
I don't understand how I can be low after chocolate an chips. ???????
Any ideas

Fat slows down the digestion of food, so the insulin is working but there's only a small amount of sugar for it to deal with. You could go high later.

I don't understand why you are eating and bolusing expecting to be in the 20s - that's not a normal blood sugar, it's dangerously high. I don't think anyone should be in the late 20s. Ever. It happens, but it's not something you should be planning to have happen, careful use of your insulin should avoid it.

5.7-6.7 is normal blood sugar, not low blood sugar. I don't think it's really anything to question or worry about. Maybe that shows your 1:10 ratio is working well for you. Course, that depends on what your blood sugar was before you ate and what the timing of your post prandial testing was and what you ate.

Did you go high later @nessa1970 ?

I ate chips and a dessert the other evening and stayed in range. It can happen :) As long as you test and don't go too low. You should be ok. Maybe keep an eye on things in case your meal ratio needs adjusting?

Have any changes been made to your basal dose at all, or anything like that?

No my basal is still the same
I was surprised not have gone up as I was use to that happening an that's what did happen
I was 9.9 tho this morning so that is higher than my usual 4 or 5
It just takes a bit of getting use to being on the lower side of things I guess an how that all works,as for two years I was basically between 15-30+ I think the meal ratio is wrong I keep going low an I don't like the hypo stall
So I'll do 1-10 today an see we're that puts me
Thank you

No I wasn't planning for it more use to it.thats how it worked for me for a few years when I was type 2 and ran high for a long time
Cheers

this reply of yours pretty much sums it up-- with the right regime bloods can be kept in range
previously you must not have been on the right regime.

I think you need to keep to a routine for a few months and just test , inject , eat , record , and live your life .

Yes that's what I've been doing for six weeks now. Starting to get use to it all it was a bit tiring the first few weeks concentrating on it all so much but it's slowly becoming part n parcel of my day

That is amazing to hear! Very well done! :D The first couple of weeks tend to be the hardest, but the longer you're doing this faithfully, the easier it gets. You're kicking butt here, keep at it!

the problem with all foods is that they have a glycemic index. ie. they are absorbed at different rates. That's why a pump has a combo bolus function which adjusts the speed of insulin going into the body. When I was on MDI I used to adjust the time of bolusing to some extent to allow this to more closely match my needs. It is difficult.
Take care and you will gradually learn what works for you.

Thank you very much
It's been a rough ride getting my head around it all
So it feels great to be working along side diabetes instead of fighting it

Nessa, just wanted to comment on how much more positively you are sounding these days. I'm sure you'll sort out your tighter waistbands in due course.

In my early days, getting used to my diagnosis, I viewed diabetes like an annoying little brother. It was really annoying, beyond words, but like a brother, it's so much better if we can find a way to rub along with it.

It took me and my elder brother the best part of 50 years to get to that point, but it was good training for the diabetes. ;) :)

Keep fighting the good fight.
