I was diagnosed on Tuesday. Annual check showed blood sugar of 7.5 mmol/L. I promptly bought a BG monitor a True Metrix Air.

I ve been getting really high results around 10 mmol/L. Even first thing in the morning.

I took 2 tests and got different results which made me question the accuracy of the monitor. So I decided to buy different brand of monitor, an AccuChek Performa Nano. The test on this new monitor gives a reading of 5.8!

Which one do I believe????

Thanks in advance for your help.

A meter can deviate 15%... I never heard of the True Metrix Air, but I had an Accu Check One Touch Vita for years; excellent brand, though the strips may be pricey. (Kept my cat alive. He was an insulin dependent T3c long before I became a T2, and diagnosed myself on his meter!).

When in doubt, wash hands, dry well, test again. You can always go for the average.

Question: What are you eating to be seeing double digits, assuming they're correct? If your numbers are high in the morning, that's normal... Well, double digits aren't, but your liver dumps glucose, it's called Dawn Phenomenon. It is your liver giving you energy to start the day, keep you going until you eat. That's why numbers can be high while you've been fasting during your sleep. I'd be more concerned about the high numbers after eating. (Test before a meal and 2 hours after first bite, you don't want to go up more than 2.0 mmol/l). https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ might help a little there.

Good luck!

Just to confirm, was this annual test just a finger prick, or was it an HbA1c from a blood sample drawn from your arm?

Secondly, did you use both BG meters at the same time, and preferably on the same drop of blood? Your BG can go up and down from minute to minute and you can only really compare meters by testing side by side.

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-to-blood-sugar-level-converter.html should help explain my first question.
An HbA1c of 7.5% equates to an average finger prick reading of 9.3 mmol/L which could well tie in with your original meter.

Edit: it would be extremely unusual to diagnose diabetes on a single finger prick test during an annual check up, but an HbA1c of 7.5% would be strong grounds for a diagnosis of diabetes.

All meters have to comply with the same accuracy standards before they can be marketed, and they are allowed to be 15% above or below the true figure. It isn't at all unusual for meters to vary, even when tests are done at the same time from the same drop of blood. Even using the same meter for consecutive tests will reveal a different answer. Not satisfactory but it is all we have, and for type 2s not on insulin, it doesn't matter. We just look for trends, and whether readings staert trending in one direction or another after many tests done in the same circumstances - ie morning fasting, before lunch, before evening meal and bedtime. One off or two off tests mean nothing.
